Counting-apparatus.-In gas meters, liquid meters, and like devices, counting and registering apparatus, which can be correctly and easily read by the unskilled, comprises gearing, of which the wheels 13, 12, 10 are driven by a pinion 7 on the first spindle 6, which is actuated by the fluid or material to be measured. In the gas-meter apparatus shown, each rotation of the spindle 6 indicates on the dial 9 the flow of two feet of gas. The spindle 14 of the wheel 13 carries a fixed pinion 15 and a loose wheel 16, which can turn relatively to the spindle 14 to an extent determined by the length of the slot 18 in the wheel 13 with which a pin on the wheel 16 engages. The wheel 16 has a smooth periphery with the exception of one tooth, and forms together with the wheel 19 a Geneva gear. The wheel 19 is connected to a wheel 21, loose on the spindle 20, by, preferably, two coiled springs 39, 40. As the pinion 15 actuates the loose wheel 21, the springs 39, 40 are extended, the wheel 19 being locked by the smooth periphery of the wheel 16 until its single tooth meshes with the wheel 19, which is then released, and moves forwards one-tenth of a rotation with a snap action due to the extended springs 39, 40. The wheel 22, having a smooth periphery excepting five teeth, mounted on the spindle 20, is thus moved forwards with a snap action, the motion being imparted through the gearing to each of the numbering-wheels. The pinions 23, 29 are locked by the smooth peripheries of the numbering-wheels 22, 27 when not being actuated by the teeth thereon. Should the springs 39, 40 break, the wheel 16 would positively drive the wheel 19. and the operation of the register would continue as before, except that there would be no snap action. The wheel 16 may be turned backwards without damaging the gearing. The dials 36, 37, 38 may be dispensed with, and the arrangement 33, 34, 35 for showing the characters on the numbering-wheels may be varied.
