In an electromagnetic friction clutch, a stationary electromagnet 8 attracts an armature plate 18 towards a pole plate 6 fast with the input shaft 2, to engage a driven disc 16 between the plates, the operative friction faces of the driving and/or driven clutch parts being coated with an antiwear material susceptible to magnetic flux and lying in the flux path. The material may be a mixture of a ferromagnetic material, e.g. iron, nickel, cobalt, antiwear additive, e.g. molybdenum, tungsten, chromium carbide, zirconium boride, corundum; and friction welding preventing additives, e.g. graphite and molybdenum sulphide, and may be sprayed on. The mixture may be different on different faces, and the coatings may be of different thicknesses. The disc 16 may first be given a sintered iron coating and then an antiwear coating. The armature is mounted on a spring disc 19 connected by bolts 20 to the pole plate 6, the stationary magnet 8 being mounted on a casing wall 1 by an annulus 9. Spaced annular pole faces 14 are defined on plate 6 by arcuate slots 12 formed through the plate to separate the pole faces.
