[Class 38 (v)] A cross-blast, gas-blast switch is adapted for high voltages by minimizing the electrostatic stress in the arc-gap after arc-rupture, and hence the risk of reignition, by spacing the insulating walls of the arc-chamber from the movable contact rod or blade a distance in inches varying from KV/P to 1.5 KV/P, where KV is the circuit kilovoltage and P the blast-pressure in lbs./in.<SP>2</SP>. As applied to the switch disclosed in Specification 544,017, in which the blast entering at 6 forces the arc against the edges of transverse insulating barriers in a diverging arc-chute 7, when the moving blade 2 is withdrawn from the fixed contact, the clearance of the blade 2 from walls 17 of horn fibre is preferably 1.14 KV/P, the expression not being valid for kilovoltages below 22 and pressures below 50. The walls 17 are shaped to provide a restricted blast passage 18 and grooved as shown at 19 to increase the creepage distance. The underlying theory is described with reference to Figs. 3-5 (not shown).
