A process for the treatment of mined chalk comprises bombarding a foraminous screen with the chalk, to shatter the chalk and separate the larger flints from the chalk fragments, impacting the chalk fragments and smaller flints to reduce the mean size thereof, further reducing the size of the impacted particles by attrition, and separating the remaining flint particles from the chalk particles. As described, mined chalk is fed into a rotary perforated drum 1, Fig. 2, having helically-arranged lifter bars 4, and ground autogenously, the flints issuing from the end and the required chalk and smaller flints being supplied via a belt 5 to an impactor. This has a crushing chamber 6, Fig. 3 and a rotor with hammers 8. The material is first crushed by impact with breaker blocks 10 and then further reduced by attrition between the hammers and attrition members 12. The reduced material may now be set screened and hydro-cycloned to remove flint. Fine particles from the second sizing stage may be ground in a wet ball mill, and further sized and classified.
