Renewable t r e a d s ; hoof-pads a n d soleplates. - A short metal shoe 2, with a removable chain tread 3, 4, holds in place an elastic heel pad 14 with a forward portion 15 and a backing 16 of leather or metal. Means are provided for preventing the heel member 6, by which the tread 3, 4 is secured, from working forwards between the hoof and pad. In one form, Figs. 1 and 3, a plate 20 is inserted between the hoof and the pad, and carries shoulders 25 to be engaged by the member 6. In a modified form, Figs. 6 and 8, grooves 34 cut in the rear of the pad 14 receive the member 6, which is prevented from cutting the material of the pad by nails 35, Fig. 6, driven across the grooves, or by a metal plate 40, Fig. 8, secured between the pad and the plate 16 and bent in at the groove 34
