A cylindrical (ceramic) casing carries one or more resistance elements 12 on its inner surface, connected to conductive end caps 40, 42, and slides on conductive terminal rods 16, 18 and wiper 30. The rods 16, 18 are joined by non-conductive (ceramic) coupling 26, to which they are bonded by epoxy cement. As the position of casing on the rods is varied, a greater or less part of element 12, between cap 40 and slider 30, is short-circuited. The wiper 30 is preferably a resilient 0-ring 32, coated with gold and silver films, and with a diameter large enough to ensure continuous contact with cylindrical resistance element 12. In alternative forms the rods 16, 18 may be moved instead of casing 10 and rod 16 may be threaded and run in. a threaded bore (82) (Fig. 2, not shown), in the end cap, with helical movement of either the easing or of rods 16, 18 to produce variation. A cylindrical resistance element may have a spiral groove (72), (Fig. 2, not shown), over part of its length, or single or double planar resistance elements (Figs. 7, 8, respectively, not shown), may be employed. The wiper may be a " fuzz button " of gold-plated steel wool, or be a C-shaped resilient element. In fixed-casing embodiments the coupling 24 and rod 18 may be eliminated. If the resistor is to be adjusted once only, or infrequently, a drop of solder may be applied at 56 for mechanical and electrical security and be removed when desired by the application of heat. If insulating rings are included in the end caps (112, 114), (Fig. 5, not shown), and external connections made to the ends of the resistance element 12, a fixed-casing resistor of the type described may be employed as a potentiometer. Where two resistance elements are employed they may be chosen to have equal nominal values of resistance and equal and opposite values of temperature coefficient of resistance, so minimizing change with temperature. (Components of the compensated variable resistor described above may be employed to make a fixed resistor of variable temperature coefficient of resistance.)
