Regulating compression.-The air supply to a compressor is controlled in accordance with the delivery pressure by a double seated balanced valve pressed in one direction by a spring and in the other direction by a piston the cylinder of which communicates through an adjustably loaded valve with a chamber open to the delivery pressure. The controlling-valve is a floating valve normally held by an independent load on a seat, the opening of which is the chamber outlet, but raised by excess pressure to engage one of a number of larger interchangeable seats. As shown, a casing a provided with an air inlet b and an outlet c to the, compressor encloses a valve e having a supporting-spring f below and a piston g above. The piston moves in a cylinder h formed in the casing and connected by a pas. sage i with a cylinder j containing a ball valve n adapted to close, a cavity k communicating with the air receiver or the delivery pipe of the compressor. The valve is held down by an adjustably weighted lever s guided by a fork v, until the air pressure rises sufficiently, when the ball valve is forced against its upper larger seating which is constituted bv one of a set of interchangeable screw-threaded rings o; the compressed air then flows through the passage i and depresses the piston, thereby throttling or closing the air inlet.
