Garment-retaining means comprises a band of resilient or elastic material, e.g. sponge rubber, plastic, &c., having projections forming a frictional surface, the band being secured along its whole length to a strip of fabric and the combination of band and strip being secured to the garment by insertion into a slot in the material thereof, rows of stitching securing the strip to the garment material alongside the slot. As shown in Fig. 7, the resilient band 26 may be inserted in a slot 25 formed in folded over material 21 at the top of a skirt 20, the fabric strip 27 extending above and below tho band and secured by stitching 29. Alternatively, the band and strip may be secured within a slot formed in an attached waistband. The band may be provided with projections in the form of ribs which may extend longitudinally, transversely, or diagonally of the band or be criss-crossed and may have a saw-toothlike formation 28. Alternatively, the band 1, Fig. 2, may have a central longitudinal ribbed thicknening 2 including a pair ot longitudinal projections 4, the flat side of the band being secured by adhesive to the fabric strip 5 which may be co-extensive with it. The strip may be of bias fabric, or two abutting strips 11, 12, of tape, Fig. 3, may be employed, the band 6, in this case having both longitudinal and transverse ribs 8, 9 respectively. The projections of the band may, alternatively, form letters or words. The fabric strip or strips may extend beyond the ends of the band as far as fastening means for securing the garment in position. The retaining means may extend around the periphery of waist of a garment such as a shirt or trousers or may be applied to the knee bands of breeches.
