Improvements in devices for causing the evaporation of fuel in a fuel-air mixture

Class 7(ii) A fuel-air mixture mixing device comprises a hollow casing having filamentous means composed of a plurality of impervious filaments wettable by the fuel therewithin and arranged with their lengths extending substantially parallel to the mixture flow therethrough to form the liquid components of the fuel-air stream into a multiplicity of extended thin fuel films upon the filaments in the general direction of the flow of the said stream. The mixture from a carburetter 15, Fig 1, is passed through a mixing device 20 comprising a screen formed of metallic ribbon. As applied to a double-throat down-draught carburetter the device 20 comprises casings 21, 22, fixed together with a tranverse baffle 25 therebetween and with inlets and outlets 30, 32, corresponding respectively to the carburetter outlets 29 and intake manifold inlets 33, a vertical baffle 28, Fig. 3, separating the inlets and outlets. The device 20 is fixed between the carburetter and intake manifold flanges by bolts 46, and the screens 35, 36 are toroidal in shape and preferably consist of copper or aluminium ribbon of the shape shown in Fig. 5, arranged parallel to the mixture flow. The mixture, diverted radially. by the baffle 25, flows through the screen 35, down through orifices 26 and through the screen 36 to the intake manifold. The baffle 25 is provided with spikes 38 for fixing the screens in position and members 52 supporting the casings 21, 22, and a ridge 40 prevents fuel collecting on the baffle 25 from being, drawn underneath the screen 35. In Fig. 7, the screen 182 is carried by pins 183 in an inverted cupshaped member 175 fitted into the intake manifold inlet 169 to which the carburetter 160 is adapted by member 165. The stepped surface 178 of the member 175 is provided with symmetrical perforations 180 which provide a preliminary splitting up of the mixture flow.
