[Also in Division H1] In an arrangement in which the D.C. voltage supplied to a load from a rectifier and transformer is to be gradually increased along a series of transformer taps, each tap about to supply voltage is first connected to the rectifier and load via a path containing a pair of controlled rectifiers which by controlling their firing angle gradually increase the voltage applied to the load up to the tap voltage, a second path containing diodes now takes over enabling the first path to be open-circuited in a no-current condition and connected to the next tap. As shown in Fig. 1, when switches S 1 and K 3 are closed SCR's 22 or 23 carry current and are phase controlled to gradually increase the load voltage to T 1 , whereupon the current is directed to switch K 1 and rectifiers 16-17 by switching off the SCR's, enabling K 3 to be opened and S 2 and K 4 closed. By firing the SCR's the current is directed back to the main path but is taken from tap T 2 through S 2 and K 4 , so now enabling the tap switch S 1 to be opened in a no-current condition. When the SCR's are switched off this time the current flows through K 2 and rectifiers 14-15. The transformer turns are not short-circuited on tap switching because one of switches K 4 and K 3 is always open. The phase control pulses are delivered by the circuit shown at the bottom of Fig. 1 at the instant when unijunction transistor 36 fires, determined by the CR circuit 34-33. Switches K 3 and K 4 either have current interrupting capabilities or are provided with a booster transformer (Fig. 2, not shown) which lowers or raises voltage at junctions 27 to reverse bias either one of diodes 14-17 or controlled rectifiers 21 and 22 to enable switches K 1 -K 4 to open or close in a no-current condition.
