March 24, 1932, No. 8758. Convention.date, April 2, 1931. [Class 80 (ii).] In clutches having centrifugallyexpanded clutching members carried round by driving- pins coacting with recesses in the ends of the members, particularly as described in Specification 373,305, yielding contact-means are provided between the pins and members to prevent rattle. As applied to coupling the rotor 12 of a squirrel-cage motor to its shaft 11, friction-faced weights 21, 22, 23, retracted by garter springs 29, are driven by axial pins 31, 32, 33 engaging substantially V-shaped recesses 27 therein, and are adapted to contact with a driven drum 16. On light load, the resultant of the thrust 43 from the leading edge of a weight 21, the force of the springs 29, and centrifugal force may, as indicated by the line 44, be insufficiently directed towards the pin 31 to avoid rattle under a pulsating driving-torque. Bent blade springs 37 are accordingly disposed on the pins or, as shown, on reduced parts 36 thereof, each spring having differential action on its pair of weights while the weights are tilted about their leading edges prior to full engagement, this action tending to wedge the weights against the driving- pins. Discs 51, 52 retain the springs 29 in their recesses 28 and space the weights from the rotor 12.
