The restraint is provided by a spigot 24 engaging a hole 25. Preferably the gap 22 is located at the position at which centrifugal force pressing the split ring against the sleeve is a maximum. The right-hand members 17 are connected to rotor 6 by slightly flexible mountings 18, while the lefthand members 17 are bolted to rotor 8 with freedom to move radially. An inlet passage 31, which in an engine, may be supplied under pressure, in stub shaft 4 connects, via a space 30, passages 27 and valve ports 26 to the interior of the sleeves 12. Valve ports 32 in sleeves 12 communicate via ports 34 and passages 33 in rotor 8 with an exhaust pipe 37 within stub shaft 5. Each cylindrical member 17 acts as a sump 50 in conjunction with oil passages 51. In an engine, the rotor 8 may comprise separate finned cylindrical members for each bore 11. Cooling air could then be provided via passages 36 to the space 38 around the exhaust pipe 37.
