Light-valves.-A Kerr cell for use in television has the two Nicol prisms 4, Fig. 1, located in holes formed in carriers 3 rotatably mounted on opposite sides of the vessel 1 containing the polarizing fluid. The carriers 3 are preferably mounted in holes formed in an outer container 2 in which the vessel 1 is carried. A shutter 10 with a limited aperture may be held between the vessel 1 and the outer container 2 to prevent undesired light passing. The electrodes 5, Fig. 2, have their extremities bent at right angles towards one another and their distance apart may be varied by a screw 8 passing through one electrode and abutting against the other. The electrodes may also be interleaved (Fig. 4, not shown). The Kerr cell is preferably used with a scanning element equipped with lenses, the source of light being spherical and fooussed on the display screen. Specification 331,325 is referred to.
