A four-blow header comprises four punches which co-operate with two or four dies to forge a rivet from a cylindrical blank, the rivet being headed and formed with a blind cavity at one end and with slots to define sectors on the shank by the first two punches and the cavity being extended to overlap the slots by one of the other punches. In a first embodiment with four punches (15)-18, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), and four dies (20)-23, the first punch and die set head a cylindrical blank and a pin (42) slidable in the punch (15) forms a cavity in the head. The rivet blank (B) is then ejected and transported to the second punch and die set, Fig. 2 (not shown), wherein the cavity is enlarged and the rivet head formed into a countersunk head (67). At the third punch and die set 17, 22, Fig. 3, the shank is slotted by a piercing pin 75 with three radial flutes (77), Fig. 4 (not shown). The slotted rivet blank Bb is ejected by three pins 79 slidable through the piercing pin. The punch 18 at the fourth punch and die set 18, 23 floats in a casing 86 and is spring-biased forwards. A piercing pin 96 projects from the punch and forces the rivet blank R into the die 23 to pierce it. Since the blank is confined by the wall of the die bore 103 the rivet is extruded rearwards over the pin to force the punch 89 rearward against spring bias. The pin 96 also causes the slots 106 to close. In the second embodiment a set of four punches (25)-(28), Figs, 7-10 (not shown), co-operate with a pair of dies (31), (33) to forge the rivet. The punches are substantially identical with the four punches of the first embodiment. In this embodiment, however, the blank is slotted in the die (33) during the first heading blow.
