Mules.-To effect the lubrication of mule spindles and to prevent the escape of oil, the spindles revolve in an oil reservoir made in sections, each of which receives a number of spindles. The sections are made in a single piece of cast or malleable iron, brass, or other metal, and consist of a number of tubes f, Figs. 1 and 2, connected by cross-tubes h and a longitudinal channel d, through which the oil circulates. The sections are connected together to extend throughout the length of the carriage frame, and a spindle a revolves in each tube f, bolsters g screwed or otherwise secured into the top of the tubes forming an upper bearing, and recesses e in the bottom of the channel d forming a lower bearing. A sleeve b carrying the wharl is fixed to each spindle and takes over the top of the tube f. Oil is supplied through a tube i, and allowed to escape through an opening closed by a screw k. Slotted lugs j, which, like the tube i, are formed in one piece with the sections, are provided for securing the sections to the frame. Separate footsteps e screwed into the bottom of the channel d may be employed, or the lower ends of the spindles may revolve in long perforated sleeves fitting into the tubes f.
