The measurement field (16) is split into at least two measurement zones, in succession in the direction of test strip (20) insertion into the apparatus, so that the strip test field is scanned separately in each zone. The test strip (20) has two zones (28,29) in succession, in front of the test field (24) in the direction of strip insertion, each with a different light reflection or transmission capacity. The difference between the measured value in the two measurement zones is compared with a given threshold value and, on breaching the threshold, a signal is generated to indicate that the test strip position is faulty. The carrier (22) to hold the test fluid has the leading zones (28,29) in dimensions which match the size of the measurement zone. The zones with a different light reflection or transmission are formed by strips in different colors, printed on to the carrier surface.
