Elevated railways and tramways. - The rails on which suspended vehicles are drawn by animals or power are hung from a suspended cable in such a fashion that they are depressed to form a level surface by the passing load as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 10. The rails may be single or double, and the outward and return lines may be suspended side by side from the supporting-cables. The rails are in lengths hinged or otherwise attached to fishplates or blocks 1 to which the hangers 2, 3 are connected. Wooden bars covered with metal, or I or U-shaped girders may be used. The supporting-cable 11 is held by clamps 14 on supports 9, which may consist of four posts 8 resting on shoes on the ground and secured at the top where they meet by straps 10, 15.
