Gas retorts ; tar.-Vertical gas retorts are charged so that no space is left in which tar can quickly separate from the gas, and are worked so that the temperature of the gas is prevented from rising beyond the limit at which the heavy hydrocarbons would be decomposed into naphthalene. The retorts a, preferably of an oval section, taper uniformly upwards, and are heated to a high temperature by gases which pass from a producer c and traverse three superposed sets of flues b in a course indicated by dotted lines, The bottom of each retort is closed by a cover or shutter d provided with a projection e to support the charge above the bottom of the retort. The top of each retort is fitted with a mouthpiece f, for introducing the charge, provided with a gas outlet and a cover h. The retorts are first heated to a high temperature and the charge, which is then introduced, is kept at a constant level corresponding with the highest of the surrounding flues. The coal, commencing with that in contact with the internal surface of the retort, is gradually converted into compact and impermeable coke, and the gas is thereby caused to pass upwards through the uncoked part of the charge. By this means the gas is prevented from reaching too high a temperature, and the tar passes over in the form of a condensable brown oil free from carbon particles.
