Electric furnaces.-An electrode furnace applicable for making calcium carbide is provided with means for regulating the electric pressure, to avoid moving the electrodes. The regulator is preferably connected to the high-tension coils of a transformer if one is used, or to the field-magnet coils of a direct-current dynamo, or the exciter of an alternator. As shown, a regulator e adjustable by a screw f is adapted to cut out groups of the high-tension coils a of a transformer in turn, each step preferably causing an alteration of two volts. The low-tension coils b are connected directly to the electrodes c, and may be cut out by the regulator instead of the high-tension coils. [Reference has been directed under Patents Act, 1902, to Specifications No. 17,060, A.D. 1889, Nos. 2904, 4866, and 22,261, A.D. 1898, Nos. 15,920 and 17,027, A.D. 1900, No. 561, A.'D. 1902, and No. 5790, A.D. 1904, [Abridgment Class Acids, alkalies, &c.].]
