Each of the rings h is fitted with a flange to bear upon the supporting-pulleys, and also with teeth k to engage with spur-wheels n on the shaft o driven from the worm shaft q, upon which a clutch w is mounted. This clutch is operated by a lever x pivoted at 2 and fitted with a weighted arm 4. The cage is locked by one arm 18 of a weighted bell-crank lever 18 the other arm 23 of which is locked normally by a bolt 16 in an arm 14 pivoted to the lever x at 15. The depression of the pedal 14 raises the bolt 16, and thus leaves the levers x and 18 free. The clutch is then thrown automatically into action by the weight 5. A band brake 8, one end of which is attached to the arm 4, is put on automatically when the lever k is thrown over.
