Impression surfaces.-The impression surface is formed by a number of bard narrow non-resilient rotary elements, so mounted and pressed against the forme as to be independently yielding. Figs. 1 and 2 show an arrangement in which the impression surface is formed by the peripheries of a number of discs 1 mounted loosely by their circular perforations 2 on an elliptical shaft 3 so that they can move upwardly independently, and pressed down on to the forme F by a rubber cushion 20 on a cylinder 21. Rollers 30, supported by a truss 40, 41, are provided for reinforcing the cylinder 21. An endless tympan 60 may pass over rolls 50 and the discs 1. In a modification, the discs are on a circular shaft of smaller diameter, and are kept in place laterally by two side rollers. Spring metal and fluid-pressure cylinders are described which may replace the rubber-covered cushioning-cylinder 20.
