A New or Improved Process and Apparatus for Extracting Oil from Fish and Obtaining Dried Residues Serving as "Guano."

Реферат: 25,425. Speltie, F. V. Dec. 12. Manures.-Relates to the treatment of fish for the extraction of oil and fat and the production of guano. The crushed and mixed fish is raised by the conveyer 2, Fig. 1, and discharged into the hopper 3, which feeds the boilers 5 through the distributing-pipe 4. Each boiler 5 is provided with the testing-cocks 14, manometer 12, liquid-level gauge 13, safety-valve 15, and a rotary shaft 8 carrying large stirring-gratings 9. Steam is supplied from the pipe 11, and escapes through the pipes 16. After boiling, the mass is driven by steam pressure along the pipe 19 to the decanters 20, of which the number is equal to or larger than that of the boilers. Each decanter is provided with a level gauge, manometer, safety-valve, steam inlet pipe 11, and a conical filter 27 made of wire gauze covered with sack. After allowing some time for settling, water is admitted from the pipe 25 below the level of the oil and fat to cause them to rise through the pipe 30 and pass to the separating-tanks 31. After draining off the main portion of the water through the cock 24, steam pressure is applied to force the residual water to pass through the filter 27 into the chamber 33. The solid matter is conducted to the steam-jacketed drier 35, Fig. 1<x>, through which it is carried by the conveyer 38 in the onposite direction to a current of hot air forced by the fan 42 over the re-heating tubes 43. The fish paste, thus dried and converted into "guano," is discharged through the lateral opening 45.
