Friction gearing. -Motion is transmitted from the shaft a, through the friction-wheels b, mounted on the casing c, to the sleeve d. Round the shaft is a spiral spring e, one end of which bears against the lug g on the shaft. A guide-collar h is, preferably, placed on the shaft inside the free end of the spring. When the shaft rotates, it carries with it the end of the spring, and will cause the spring to expand and press against the wheels b with a force which increases with the rate of revolution. To increase the friction between the friction-wheels and the spring, the outer ends of the wheels may be tapered, and a ring with a conical edge may be attached to the spring to engage with the tapered ends of the wheels, or the end of the spring itself may be formed into such a ring. The ends of the wheels will be tapered inwards or outwards according as the expansion of the spring tends to shift the wheels outwards or inwards, which depends upon the direction in which the spring is wound. In the form shown in Fig. 5, two springs e, e<1> are attached to a ring f engaging with grooves in the friction-wheels. Each spring engages with a lug g, g<1> so that one spring will be brought into action in each direction of rotation. By making the sleeve d stationary, the motion may be communicated to the casing c.
