Ore and oxide processes.-In a process for the direct reduction of iron ores by means of producer gas, in which part of the gas is burnt in a regenerator used to raise the temperature of the remainder of the gas before it passes to the reduction chamber, steam is supplied to the producer only during the time it is used for heating the regenerator. For continuous working, two producers b, b<1> and two regenerators a, a<1> are used, the ore being fed to an inclined. reducing-chamber at i, and the product discharged at k. The combustion products from each regenerator escape through a hot-blast stove d for the producers. During the generation of reducing-gas, the producer blast may contain some of the spent gas from the reduction chamber, and the remainder of the spent gas may be burnt in the regenerator or in the hotblast stove; the spent gas may also be used to sweep out hydrogen from the producer before its gas is delivered to the reduction chamber.
