[Class 90] In the production of hydrogen by the steamiron process, the hydrogen-producing stage and the iron-oxide reducing stage are carried out in separate vessels, the metallic iron and/or the iron oxide being maintained in the form of small particles as a fluid bed (i.e. a bed of particles through which up-flowing gas is passing at such a speed that the bed assumes some of the properties of a liquid) while avoiding the production of an entrained stream (i.e. in which the gas velocity is so high that the particles pass through the reaction vessel as a stream with the gases). Preferably there is a continuous transfer of iron-oxide from the hydrogen producing stage to the reducing stage and of metallic iron in the reverse direction a fluid bed being maintained in both stages. The flow of the solid particles may be in co-current with the gases, but in the reduction stage it is preferred to operate with counter-current flow. The particles of ferruginous material may be admixed with particles of inert material. Carbon monoxide, producer gas or water gas are the preferred reducing agents. The reducing stage may operate at a temperature of 500-550‹C., and the hydrogen producing stage at a temperature of 500-600‹C., the reducing stage being operated solely by the sensible heat in the particles from the hydrogen-producing stage. Specification 569,691 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
