A seal for a continuous casting furnace having a melting chamber with a mold therein for producing a metal cast includes a passage between the melting chamber and external atmosphere. As the cast moves through the passage, the cast outer surface and the passage inner surface define therebetween a reservoir for containing liquid glass or other molten material to prevent the external atmosphere from entering the melting chamber. Particulate material fed into the reservoir is melted by heat from the cast to form the molten material. The molten material coats the cast as it moves through the passage and solidifies to form a coating to protect the hot cast from reacting with the external atmosphere. Preferably, the mold has an inner surface with a cross-sectional shape to define a cross-sectional shape of the cast outer surface whereby these cross-sectional shapes are substantially the same as a cross-sectional shape of the passage inner surface.

The new composition of Ti-6Al-4V of the present invention is obtained by modifying the limits of the composition of the alloy to 5.5 to 6.75% of Al, 3.5 to 4.5 of V, 0, 20 to 0.30% O2, an Fe content of less than 0.50% and a content of less than 0.50% of other unavoidable impurities, and by heating the alloy composition to temperatures in the range of beta phase for further processing.

The purpose of this process is to reduce the oxygen and / or oxide content of the layers formed on the surface of a metal casting during the molding to concentrations substantially equal to or lower than those found inside the casting. According to the invention, this process comprises: a) bringing the metal casting into contact with a metal deoxidizer in a dry inert atmosphere, at a high temperature sufficient to at least vaporize the metal deoxidizer, and maintaining contact of the vaporized deoxidizer with the surface of said molding until the oxide and / or oxygen of the surface is reduced to substantially reach the corresponding concentration within the molding; and b) acid washing the casting to remove oxide from the surface of the casting.

The present invention relates to a process in which a metal or metal alloy is deposited by thermal spraying on a base alloy before the latter is hot worked. More specifically, the invention relates to the use of a coating of titanium plasma deposited on a plate of titanium alloy for improving hot workability. This combination allows the cracking sensitive base alloy to be rolled with minimal surface and edge cracking. Further, by using a plasma sprayed titanium coating, there is observed a reduction in the rolling force which is required to reduce the thickness of the material during the hot working operation.

Rolling; working at specified temperatures.- In a method of hot rolling titanium to thin gauge sheets, rectangular ingots are rolled to sheets of intermediate gauge which are then sandwiched between sheets of metal such as steel having a lower heat conductivity than titanium to retain the heat and protect the titanium surfaces against oxidation during rolling to the final thickness. In examples round ingots at a temperature of 1700‹ to 1850‹ F. are described and flattened into rectangular slabs in successive forging stages. The slabs are then reduced by rolling in a number of stages after heating and reheating in continuous furnaces under a reducing atmosphere initially to temperatures of 1520‹ to 1580‹ F. and at later stages to a temperature of 1350‹ F. followed in some cases by doubling and redoubling of the sheet. In one example four sheet thicknesses resulting from doubling and redoubling are sandwiched between two sheets of steel, heated to 1350‹ F. rolled in two stages, hot doubled, reheated and given final rolling passes until the sheets are reduced to a thickness of 0.013-0.014 inches. The resultant eight-titanium sheets are then separated. The finished sheets after annealing and pickling may be cold-rolled to as much as 50 per cent reduction.

The impact resistance and resistance to corrosion of wrought titanium and titanium-base alloy products is increased by reducing the hydrogen content to 6-20 p.p.m. Titanium-base alloys containing (1) Al 1.3%, V 8%, Fe 5%, O2 0.4%; (2) Al 6%, V 4%; (3) Al 4%, Mn 4%, and having the above low hydrogen content are referred to in the Specification. Alloy (1) may be annealed by heating to 1250 DEG F. for 1 hour, furnace cooling to 900 DEG F. and then air cooling. It may be hardened by heating to 1375-1400 DEG F. for 1 hour, water quenching and ageing at 1000 DEG F. for 2 hours or 900 DEG F. for 4 hours.

A casting furnace for preheating and melting solid feed material includes a melting chamber with a melting hearth therein and a feed chamber in fluid communication with the melting chamber for conveying the solid material into the melting chamber. A heat source melts the feed material within the melting hearth and produces surplus heat used to preheat the solid feed material. Preferably, gas is heated by the heat source and moved into the feed chamber to preheat the feed material while it is conveyed toward the melting hearth. The heated gas is recycled back into the melting chamber to be re-heated therein and reused to preheat additional feed material in the feed chamber. Where the heat source in the melting chamber includes a plasma torch, the gas is recycled via the plasma torch, which ionizes the gas to create a plasma plume for melting the solid material.

An improved process for successful and homogeneous incorporation of ruthenium and iridium into titanium and titanium alloy melts, ingots, and castings via traditional melting processes (e.g., VAR and cold-hearth) has been developed. This result is achieved through the use of low-melting point Ti-Ru or Ti-Ir binary master alloys within the general composition range of ≦45 wt. % Ru and with a preferred composition of Ti-(15-40 wt. % Ru), or within the general composition range of ≦61 wt. % Ir and with a preferred composition of TI-(20-58 wt. % Ir). Primary features are its lower melting point than pure titanium, lower density than pure Ru and Ir metals, and the ability to be readily processed into granular or powder forms.
