[Class 78 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXII] A spring mechanism for counterbalancing the movement of a ramp 1, Fig. 1, pivoted to a vehicle used for transporting tanks, artillery &c. comprises a helical spring 5 housed in the vehicle frame 6 and connected by a cable 3, passing over a pulley 4 and over a cam 7 on the ramp, to an anchorage 2 on the ramp. Before meeting the cam, the cable passes under a rod 8 running between links 9 pivoted at 10 on brackets projecting from a transverse chassis member 12. The 'spring is compressed as the ramp is lowered from the raised position shown in full lines. In a modification, Fig. 3, a pair of side ramps 20 are hinged to secondary side ramps 21 pivoted at 28 on the vehicle frame 22, the ramps having anchorages 23 for cables 24 passing over cams 25 and thence-to pulleys 26 on the ramps 21 to springs 27 housed below the ramps 21.
