The present application provides a unique process of canning a controlled substance where the cans are hermetically sealed and clearly identified in a number of different ways. The process will begin by inserting a packing and dehumidifying agent, preferably a formed rice cake. The controlled substance is then inserted. In some cases the rice cakes will be eliminated or just a single rice cake will be used on the top or the bottom. If the process of storing the controlled substance in an inert atmosphere is desired, the oxygen in the container is replaced with gaseous nitrogen. After the container has been sealed in the conventional pop-top canning procedure; an identifying scent substance is permanently adhered to the can or label. An internal or external microchip could be used to detect, track and trace the container filled with a controlled substance.

In some embodiments, the method comprises (1) reducing the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere of a sealed container comprising the pigment to a level such that the oxygen will not discolor the pigment when CO 2 is introduced into the container, and (2) introducing CO 2 into the sealed container while retaining or further reducing the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere of the sealed container. Grapes while attached to the stems where they formed are cooled with the removal of excess moisture and are enclosed within an enclosure containing a gaseous atmosphere (e.g., air) bounded by a semi-permeable film having an oxygen transmission rate of approximately 100 to 400 cm 3 -mil/m 2 /24 hr., and preferably approximately 260 to 325 cm 3 -mil/m 2 /24 hr. The enclosure is sealed and the concentration of carbon dioxide present therein is adjusted to an initial concentration of approximately 3 to 19 percent by volume (preferably 13 to 18 percent by volume). The initial concentration of carbon dioxide within the specified semi-permeable enclosure has been found to well prolong the storage life of the grapes stored therein at a temperature of approximately 31 to 35° F. with the advantageous promotion of continued grape respiration at a low level during storage. The grape quality for the intended end use (e.g., human consumption as a table grape) is effectively extended. Prolonged storage for 30 or 60 days or more in the storage zone is made possible. Accordingly, the time for the otherwise perishable grapes to serve their intended use is effectively extended in a straightforward and economical manner while using otherwise standard cold storage conditions.

A self-sealing container, used for transferring one or more air sensitive samples between vacuum systems, includes a housing with a cavity that holds the sample(s), and a lid disposed on top of the housing. The lid is configured to interface with the housing to form a seal over the cavity when the lid is closed. At least two flexure systems, each coupled to the housing and the lid, are disposed on opposing sides of the housing. The flexure systems apply forces to the lid that move the lid horizontally and vertically above the housing, into an open position. A pneumatic actuator, movably coupled to the housing and the lid, that is actuated by a change in ambient pressure. The packaging includes a packing tray which is sized for receiving a piece of fresh meat of predetermined cut. The tray is overwrapped with a web of clear plastic wrapping material. The overwrapped tray is ventilated to ensure gas communication between enclosed regions of the overwrapped tray and the outside ambient without blockage due to run off juices from the meat product or shifting of the meat product within the tray during transport. A number of similarly ventilated overwrapped trays are then placed within an outer barrier bag which is first evacuated of normal atmosphere and then flushed with a preservation-enhancing gas. The outer barrier bag is then sealed. Upon opening of the outer barrier bag, exposure to oxygen causes the packaged meat products to bloom to a desired fiery red color. Upon removal from the outer barrier bag, the ventilated overwrapped trays are ready for retail case-ready display without the need for repackaging or cosmetic repair.
