Water-insoluble monoazo dyestuffs and process for their production

The invention comprises water-insoluble monoazo dyes of formulae wherein R is a halogen atom, R1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy radical, R2 is a -CnH2n+1, cyanoethyl or -CH2-CH2COOR radical, n is a number from 1-4 and Ac is the acyl radical of an aliphatic carboxylic acid which may be substituted, the dyes being free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups. The dyes are prepared by coupling a diazotized 1 - amino - 2 - cyano - 4 - nitrobenzene or 1 - amino - 2,4 - dinitro - 6 - halobenzene or 1 - amino - 2 - cyano - 4 - nitro - 6 - halobenzene with an appropriate 3-acylamino-N,N-disubstituted-aniline. The coupling component may contain -CH2CH2COOH instead of -CH2CH2COOR2 groups and in this case the dyes are esterified with an alkanol and when necessary the saponified acylamino group is reacylated. The dyes are used to colour polyamide, cellulose ester and, in particular, polyester fibres in blue shades.
