Fabrics containing camouflage patterns are produced from dyes wherein at least certain of the colors contained in the pattern contain a low reflectance dye. The low reflectance dye is added to one or more colors in the pattern in order to preserve the camouflage pattern when viewed through night vision goggles as relatively long wavelengths, such at wavelengths greater than 900 nm. In one embodiment, the low reflectance dye comprises a thiazine. The low reflectance dye is blended with other dyes to produce colors in the pattern. By altering the concentration of the low reflectance dye in each of the colors, the colors contained in the camouflage pattern remain separate and distinct even at relatively long wavelengths.

Leuco compounds of anthraquinonoid and indigoid compounds, esters of.--N-substitution products of leuco sulphuric esters of anthraquinonoid and indigoid compounds containing amino groups are obtained by treating the esters with nitrohalogenaryls, containing labile halogen, in the presence of acid-fixing agents. The dyes are made by reacting in an aqueous medium and in the presence of an acid-binding agent, one mol. of a compound of the formula <FORM:0961885/C4-C5/2> where R1 is chlorine or has one of the values of R above, and, in any sequence, one mol. of a compound of the formula <FORM:0961885/C4-C5/3> where x and y are as above and one mol. of a compound of the formula <FORM:0961885/C4-C5/4> in which the symbols z are as above, and, when a chlorine atom is present in the triazine nucleus, reacting the product with one mol. of a compound of the formula R-H, where R has one of the values given above but not phenyl. Leuco compounds of vat dyes, esters of.-Leuco compounds of vat-dyes, which may contain some unreduced vat-dye, are converted into water-soluble derivatives by treating them with one of the following reagents in presence of a metal and an organic base :-chlorsulphonic acid and its salts, oleum and its salts, alkylsulphuric halides, sulphuric anhydride, phosphorus oxychloride, alkyl phosphoric halides. The addition of the metal renders unnecessary the use of a closed vessel or an inert atmosphere. Examples are given of the production of stable derivatives from the leuco compounds of the following dyestuffs :-indigo, thioindigo, indanthrone, flavanthrone, and dimethoxydibenzanthrone, the preparation of the various leuco compounds is also described. As reagents are specified chlorsulphonic acid and methylsulphuric acid chloride, and as metals zinc, tin, magnesium, and copper bronze or a mixture of the latter with zinc. Sulphuric esters and salts of leuco compounds of dye intermediates of the anthraquinone series or complexes comprising such salts are made by treating the vat dye with a metal in presence of an organic quaternary ammonium halide and a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon free from acidic or basic groups, followed by treatment of the salt or complex so obtained with a sulphating agent, e.g. an addition compound of sulphur trioxide and an organic amide derived from a secondary amine. In the first step, a weakly acidic substance may be used, such as a phenol, an amide derived from ammonia or a primary amine, an organic acid or a 1,3-diketone, with or without a nitrogenous base such as cyclohexylamine, ammonia, methylamine, isopropylamine or picoline. Hydrocarbons specified are benzene, hexane, or cyclohexane, and substituted hydrocarbons specified are ethylene dichloride, acetone, benzonitrile and acetonitrile. In an example, anthraquinone is reacted with zinc dust in acetonitrile and in presence of tetraethylammonium bromide or chloride, followed by sulphation with dimethylformamide-sulphur trioxide. The dyes may be prepared by reacting a suitable vat dye, i.e. one containing at least 5 or at the most 6 condensed rings fused together and (a) at least one carboxylic acid amide group with a sulphonating agent so as to introduce at least one SO3H group or (b) at least one carboxylic acid amide group and at least one sulphonic acid halide group with a mild hydrolysing agent, or (c) at least one acylatable amino group with an acylating agent which, if the dye does not contain a sulphonic acid group, contains a sulphonic acid group or a derivative thereof which is converted into a sulphonic acid group under the reaction conditions, or (d) at least one carboxylic acid amide group and at least one mercapto group with an oxidizing agent. In examples, the preparation of vat dyes containing di-(acylamino-anthraquinonylamino) - anthanthrone, anthraquinone - benzacridone and dibenzpyrene-quinone residues is specified. Specified acylating agents include diphenyl - 4 - carboxylic acid chloride, thiophene - 2 - carboxylic acid 4 - sulphochloride, terephthaloyl and isophthaloyl chlorides, oxalyl chloride, succinyl chloride, naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid chloride, 4,41-diphenyl- or -diphenylsulphone- or -diphenylmethane- or -diphenylamine - dicarboxylic acid chloride, azobenzene - 2,21 - dicarboxylic acid chloride, pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid chloride, benzoic acid-m-sulphochloride and 2-mercaptobenzthiazole-6-carboxylic acid chloride. The process described in the parent Specification, whereby 1 : 2 : 2<1> : 1<1>-dianthraquinoneazine is reduced and esterified with the aid of an addition product of a tertiary base and sulphur trioxide, in presence of an excess of tertiary base and in presence of a metal, with complete exclusion of free acid, is applied to a halogen derivative of a 1 : 2 : 2<1> : 1<1>-dianthraquinoneazine. Polyesters (apparently mixtures of tri-and tetra-esters) are obtained, which are suitable for printing purposes on account of their good solubility and small sensitivity to overoxidation. In an example, dichloro-1 : 2 : 2<1> : 1<1>-dianthraquinoneazine (cf. German Specification 229,166) is treated with pyridine-sulphur trioxide, pyridine and copper power in an atmosphere of nitrogen and at 70 DEG C. ; caustic potash is added and the solution on concentrating precipitates a tri-ester ; the filtrate yields on evaporation a freely-soluble product which appears to be a tetra-ester. By adding caustic soda solution instead of caustic potash, warming, filtering and evaporating, a paste of the sodium salts of these two esters is obtained, which is suitable for printing purposes. In a similar manner a mixture of the polyesters of a trichloro derivative of 1 : 2 : 2<1> : 1<1>-dianthraquinoneazine is obtained. Specifications 247,787, 251,491, and 261,139, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], also are referred to.

Camouflage pattern with extended infrared reflectance separation

Fabrics containing camouflage patterns are produced from dyes wherein at least certain of the colors contained in the pattern contain a low reflectance dye. The low reflectance dye is added to one or more colors in the pattern in order to preserve the camouflage pattern when viewed through night vision goggles as relatively long wavelengths, such at wavelengths greater than 900 nm. In one embodiment, the low reflectance dye comprises a thiazine. The low reflectance dye is blended with other dyes to produce colors in the pattern. By altering the concentration of the low reflectance dye in each of the colors, the colors contained in the camouflage pattern remain separate and distinct even at relatively long wavelengths.

The low reflectance dye is added to one or more colors in the pattern in order to preserve the camouflage pattern when viewed through night vision goggles as relatively long wavelengths, such at wavelengths greater than 900 nm. In one embodiment, the low reflectance dye comprises a thiazine. The low reflectance dye is blended with other dyes to produce colors in the pattern. By altering the concentration of the low reflectance dye in each of the colors, the colors contained in the camouflage pattern remain separate and distinct even at relatively long wavelengths.

The invention comprises water-soluble leucosulphuric acid ester salts which contain a single anthraquinone nucleus and have, in the form of the free acid, the formula <FORM:0961884/C4-C5/1> where each x is hydrogen or chlorine or -NH aroyl, each y is hydrogen or chlorine, R1 is -NH2, -NH alkyl, -N (alkyl)2, -NH cyclohexyl, -NH aryl, -O alkyl, -O aryl, piperidino or morpholino and where at least 6 hydrogen atoms are attached to the anthracene nucleus and wherein the alkyl groups contain 1 to 6 carbon atoms. The dyes are made by reacting, in an aqueous medium and in the presence of an acid-binding agent, 1 mol. of a compound of the formula <FORM:0961884/C4-C5/2> where R3 is chlorine or has one of the values of R1 above and R4 is chlorine or has one of the values of R2 above, with 1 mol. of a compound of the formula <FORM:0961884/C4-C5/3> where x and y are as above, and when one or two chlorine atoms are present in the triazine ring, the product is reacted with one or two mols. respectively of a compound of the formula H-R1. The leuco-sulphuric esters are used to dye and print cotton in red and yellow shades.

Leuco compounds of vat dyes, derivatives of.- Aryl ethers of the leuco compounds of vat dyes are obtained by heating the leuco compounds, or the vat dyes themselves in presence of reducing agents such as metals, with alkali phenolates preferably in an inert solvent or excess of the phenol. The products may also be obtained from intermediate compounds which are convertible into hydro-compounds of the vat dyes under the conditions employed. The products may be employed as intermediates for dyestuffs, for the purification of dyestuffs, and in part for dyeing directly. According to examples, (1) pyranthrone is heated with excess of phenol, zinc dust, or other finely-divided metals such as copper or iron, or with trichlorbenzene as diluent instead of excess of phenol, to give a phenyl ether; the same product may be obtained by using 2: 2<1>- dimethyt-1 : 1<1>-dianthraquinonyl instead of pyranthrones; (2) pyranthrone is reduced with sodium carbonate and hydrosulphite, then heated with potassium hydroxide and phenol to give the monophenylether of dihydropyranthrone. which dyes vegetable fibre cherry red shades which are converted into green-brown shades on exposure to air and by treatment with acid oxidizing agents into the shade of pyranthrone; (3) flavanthrone heated with phenol, sodium carbonate, and zinc dust, gives a product which forms a blue hydrochloride; and (4) the diphenyl ethers of indigo, dibenzanthrone, Bz2: Bz2<1>-dimethoxydibenzanthrone, prepared in a similar manner, are described.
