Detergent concentrates are prepared by mixing particulate castor wax (i.e. hydrogenated castor oil) with water in the presence of a water-soluble C8-C18 alkyl mononuclear aryl sulphonate at above 160 DEG F. to form a homogeneous liquid mixture which is cooled at a rate of not more than 5 DEG F. per minute to give a stable homogeneous dispersion substantially free from palpable lumps or crystals. The sulphonate is preferably an alkyl benzene sulphonate although toluene and xylene derivatives may also be used, the associated cations being Na, K, NH4, mono- or tri-ethanolamine, or isopropanolamine. The dispersions may contain 1-18% castor wax and 1-25% sulphonate. In the examples, the sulphonate is sodium tridecyl benzene sulphonate containing sodium sulphate impurity. An emulsifier is present from 0.01 to 10 total weight percent, along with an alkylene glycol present from 0.002 to 11 total weight percent. A microemulsion is present in the composition from 0.2 to 15 total weight percent. Water forms a majority of the composition such that the composition is monophasic for at least 4 months storage at 20° Celsius. The composition is well suited for use in a process to remove a lipophlic substance from hands or an inanimate substrate by applying the composition and after allow sufficient time for the substance to be softened or solubilized, removing the composition and at least a portion of the substance. Silicone gaskets, as well as other cured resins and paints are readily removed.

Cleaning compositions and methods of making and using the same are provided. The cleaning compositions of the present invention may include at least one alkyl 3-hydroxybutyrate and water, optionally including at least one surfactant and one or more additional additives. The cleaning compositions of the present invention, which are non-toxic and environmentally benign, can be useful to remove many types of soils from a range of different substrates in a variety of domestic, industrial, and/or institutional applications. 2. The cleaning composition of claim 1 , wherein R1 is an alkyl group having three or four carbon atoms.3. The cleaning composition of claim 1 , wherein R1 is an alkyl group selected from the group consisting of isopropyl claim 1 , propyl claim 1 , isobutyl claim 1 , n-butyl claim 1 , and sec-butyl.4. The cleaning composition of claim 1 , wherein R1 is an alkyl group selected from the group consisting of isobutyl claim 1 , n-butyl claim 1 , and sec-butyl.5. The cleaning composition of claim 1 , wherein said alkyl 3-hydroxybutyrate has a vapor pressure of less than 0.10 torr measured at 20° C.7. Cleaning compositions and methods of making and using the same are provided. The cleaning compositions of the present invention are both non-toxic and environmentally benign, and are effective at removing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic soils from a wide range of substrate types, including metal, glass, painted wall board, vinyl, concrete, and many others. A cleaning agent comprising a polyacrylate terpolymer and a maleic olefin compound may be added to an aqueous system having a metal surface, such as a metal surface of a heat exchanger, in a concentration sufficient to remove fouling deposits from the metal surface in neutral or alkaline conditions. An environmentally-friendly, low VOC cleaning composition for industrial and consumer applications comprising (a) a blend of dibasic esters, (b) one or more nonionic surfactants (c) and, optionally, (d) water or a solvent. The cleaning composition is in the form of a microemulsion when mixed in water and is dilutable with water by an amount of at least 99 parts water to 1 part said cleaning composition without phase separation. 1.
