Web has surface density not in the excess of 300 g/cu.cm and width of at least 5 cm. Fibrous fabric of multiple-oriented webs has several webs with unidirectionally oriented fibrous members, with webs being applied onto one another and joined. Machine has several weft insertion apparatuses, each having device for feeding weft insertion apparatus to continuous web having unidirectional fibrous members, gripping head for gripping web free end, and device adapted for laying sequential portions in parallel with transverse direction to define predetermined angle with advancement direction and equipped with gripping head drive. Method and apparatus may be used for producing reinforcement layers for carcass making part of composite articles. 1442695 Cross-laying threads; knitting- machines WIRKMASCHINENBAU KARLMARX-STADT VEB 25 April 1974 [21 May 1973] 18126/74 Headings D1C and D1R An array of weft threads 5 is laid by laying means 2 between thread transport means 4, 4a which are aligned at an angle. The term threads includes slubbings, fleece webs and film webs. The laying means is characterised in that it allows the threads to be hooked simultaneously at each hooking of the weft array. The laid array is preferably transported to a stitch bonding or warp knitting means. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 laying means 2 comprises a beam pivoted at 3 and containing guide holes 13 for warp threads 5. The beam and the pivot are reciprocated by carriage 1. As the carriage moves from transport means 4 the tension in threads 5 holds the beam against stop 7 so that the beam is parallel to transport means 4a. The embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) is similar except that the thread laying beam, is normally held by springs (11) in an orientation bisecting the angle α between the thread transport means. As the carriage approaches a transport means 4, 4a a projection (12) of the laying beam strikes a stop (10, 10a), causing the laying beam to pivot against the action of the spring until it is aligned parallel with the transport means. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 the laying means comprises a plate 2 having thread guide slots 13'. Rails 14, 14a enclosing an angle α are mounted on the underside of the plate. Hence as the carriage travels towards the hooks of transport means 4a the tension in the threads 5 causes the point at which the orientation of each thread changes from vertical to horizontal to lie on a line 8 parallel to transport means 4a.

The stitches 10 substantially restrict the extensibility of the crepe paper sheet and the apparent projections 13 are formed at a position in the crepe paper sheet 5 directly in line with the ends 11 of the stitches 10. According to the preferred method described, each apparent projection 13 is in reality a depression between two projections formed in the opposite surface of the crepe paper sheet without puncturing the paper. In an alternative embodiment there is a pair of apparent projections 13 formed in the crepe paper sheet 5 between adjacent rows of stitches 10.

The nonwoven is folded in zigzags to give a serpentine structure (11), and the facing legs of the zigzags are bonded together by their fibers. The bonded package is heated, to melt the fusible fibers at the butting legs of the serpentine material. The bonded package is cut through the center by a conventional pile cutter (F), to be separated into two layers (110,110') each with a velvet pile surface appearance. The nonwoven is folded into a zigzag and the surfaces of the facing legs are bonded together by a row of slide needles for each material surface, to form fiber locking stitches. Each row of needles has knocking-over and controlled holding-down units. A laterally-oriented nonwoven and/or a material with a high content of bicomponent fibers is fed into the knocking-over plane, for its fibers to be looped with the fibers of the nonwoven in the serpentine stack. The nonwoven is laid into folds (A) by a folding roller and a pair of take-in rollers near its circumference. A low-strength pulsed air stream is directed from below the plane of the nonwoven (1) at the surface of the folding roller. After the folding stage (A), the serpentine fabric (11) is compressed within a channel, defined at both sides across the zigzag folds, and the compressed legs of the fabric folds are fixed by heat through heat radiation and/or hot contact surfaces. A patterned stitch-bonded fabric having a basic fibrous layer which is stitch-bonded with a binding warp thread thereby forming wales of loops on the face of the fabric and connecting loops on the back of the fabric. The face of the fabric has, furthermore, courses of loops which extend transversely to the wales. These courses of loops are divided into groups each of which has at least two successive courses of loops. The wales of loops are divided into sets; each set includes at least two adjacent wales which are interconnected by means of connecting loops extending across the back face of the fabric. The outer wales of adjacent sets of wales are not interconnected to each other and, consequently, the basic fibrous layer bulges out in the front and back face of the fabric in the area between the outer wales of adjacent sets of wales. WEFT INSERTION DRAPERY FABRICS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An aesthetic dimensionally stable fabric suitable for use as drapery and upholstery fabric, or like decorative fabrics, is produced utilizing a weft inserted warp knitting machine having three or more stitching bars. A substrate that is dimensionally stable warp-wise (such as a 100 percent polyester non-woven fabric that is dimensionally stable both warp-wise and weft-wise) is fed to the machine, as are weft yarns. The weft yarns are stitched in place by stitching thread fed to the stitching bars, the two main stitching bars moving in opposite directions in a basically zigzag form to create an aesthetically pleasing effect, but forming a pattern which is not dimensionally stable. However the final fabric produced is dimensionally stable as a result of the substrate properties. The intermediate fabric has selvage areas. Stitching thread is fed to a third stitching bar which is utilized to provide a dimensionally stable stitching pattern in the selvage areas of the fabric to facilitate finishing operations on the fabric, and the zig-zag form is preferably also continued into the selvage areas by one of the two main stitching bars. The selvage may subsequently be removed. The decorative fabric produced may be foam backed, particularly for drapery use.

A stitched pile surface structure and a process and apparatus for producing and finishing the same is disclosed. The stitched pile surface structure includes a backing having a thickness (T). A plurality of parallel lines of stitches extends longitudinally along the backing. Each stitch has a predetermined stitch length dimension (S). A plurality of rows of pile elements (either as loop pile or cut pile) is formed from one or more pile yarn(s) having an effective predetermined yarn diameter (D). The total weight of the yarn used to form the pile loop elements is (G) grams. Substantially all of the stitches have a thread length (DKL) that satisfies the relationship: DKL∫D.(1 + ∏/2) + (2?.T) + (2.¿S). A mass of binder material having a weight of less than (G) grams is disposed on the pile surface structure. The major portion of the binder material is concentrated in the vicinity of the root portions of the pile elements so that substantially all of the filaments in the distended regions of the root portion of substantially all of the pile elements have binder material thereon. The upper two-thirds of substantially all of the pile elements are substantially free of binder.

To produce knitted/needled multi-axial bands of yarns, in a number of layers with defined yarn orientations, one layer is fed at first continuously into the machine by an initial knitting bed. A second knitting bed, after the first in the working direction of the machine, knits/needles at least one further layer. A number of layers are formed at the first knitting bed and, subsequently, by the insertion of at least one further layer the number of layers and additional layers are knitted/needled together. The method comprises providing a backing laminate (10) comprising a layer of base material (12, 14) and a sealing layer (16) of heat softenable polymeric material along a back surface (17) of the base material (12, 14); stitching a plurality of yarns (18) through the base material (12, 14) to form loops (20) projecting from a front face (13) of the base material (12, 14) and locking portions (21) of the stitch adjacent the back face (17) of the base material (12, 14); and heating the layer (16) of polymeric material to adhere it to the locking portions (21) of the stitches. The sheet material can then be used if loops (20) are desired, or the loops (20) can be cut to form hooks (72) or heated to form headed projections (65) on the sheet material.

A placement and fixing device includes a unit provided for the production of pre manufactured filament sheet sections with fixed ends held by fixing elements at a preset interval. A placement and fixing device for a sheet which is partially implemented as a dense flat structure of filaments, lying in a plane, on a conveyor chains (15) continuously supplying a connecting station (6) for the production of a scrim having the filament sheet, with a placement unit (4) for placement of the filament sheet, with a holding unit (5) for at least temporary fixing of the placed filament sheet, and with a connecting station, particularly for the performance of the process. A unit (7) is provided for the production of pre manufactured filament sheet sections (1) with fixed ends held by fixing elements (2, 3) at a preset interval. The holding unit is affixed to the conveyor chains (15) in such the filament sheet is held, at least at the connecting station. An independent claim is also included for a method for placement and fixing of a filament sheet, for the production of scrims, comprises forming a closed surface and as separate filament sheet sections between two conveyor units (13) which supplies a connecting station. The filament sheet sections are fixed with a fixing element to the end regions of the conveyor units. The interval of the fixing elements of a filament sheet section relative to the conveyor units is selected such that the filament sheet sections are, in their fixed state, positioned essentially flat between the conveyor units, and immediately before entering the connecting station.

A structural fabric (20, 28, 40, 48) and a method for making the same is disclosed. Structural fabric (20) is comprised of a plurality of substantially parallel, uniaxial structural yarn (22) and a secondary yarn (24) for holding the structural yarns (22) in place. The structural yarns (22) are oriented at an angle skewed from both the fabric centerline (26) and a line perpendicular to the fabric centerline (26). A double biased fabric (28) is made by sewing two fabrics (20) together with secondary yarn (39). An alternate double bias fabric (40) is made by sewing together with secondary yarn (46) the two layers of a flattened helix made from structural yarn (42, 44) running spirally substantially the length of the fabric (40). A triaxial fabric (48) is made by sewing together with a secondary yarn (56) two single biased fabrics (50, 52) and a layer of longitudinally-extending structural yarn pieces (54).
