291,071. Aktiebolaget Spontan. May 27, 1927, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing.-Relates to speed gearing which varies automatically with the load and comprises an element a to which alternate positive and negative impulses are imparted, the latter being transmitted to a stationary part such as 31, Fig. 1, as described in Specifications 259,975 and 276,853. The invention is characterized in that the planetary, eccentric, or oscillating masses which give rise to these impulses are balanced with respect to the axis of the gearing, and also with respect to a medial plane at right angles to that axis, there being in effect a forked relationship. Thus in the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, eccentric masses d, d<1> have this double symmetry. are dragged by links f, f<1> attached fly-wheel g so that they slip round on ball bearings upon eccentrics b, c, c<1> which are fast on the sleeve element a. Impulses alternating in direction are imparted to the sleeve a, the rearward impulses being transmitted in a damped form to the abutment 31 throught a mass l and springs as described in Specification 281,983. The mid eccentric b is in one piece and the other c, c<1> is divided and surrounds the first as a fork, to get the lateral symmetry. In an arrangement shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the masses d, d<1> oscillate on levers f, f<1> and are connected respectively to a middle crank p and a divided or forked crank p<1>, p<2>, all carried by the sleeve a. Planetary masses d, d', Fig. 7, have this same forked relation.
