The present invention is a technique for provisioning and assessment of voice quality in Internet Protocol (IP) voice applications. A predetermined quality of service (QoS) is received from a user in the form of an acceptable packet loss. The technique measures current packet loss and delay in the network and in the terminal, and determines and optimum play-out delay for the use by a play-out adaptation routine. An actual QoS is reported back to the user. To enhance packet delay and loss measurement, a QoS engine component is placed on the terminal side of the packetizer, therefore including packetizer losses in any measurement of the network. 1. Monitoring messages (e.g. electronic communications (emails, instant messages) of employees) in a network wherein a message sent by a user of the network to one or more recipients is received and a weight is applied to any text from any previous message that appears in the message. A measure of language content (tone of language) used in the message is formed and stored in one or more data stores. Information identifying the sender of the message is also stored. The stored measure of the language content and the stored information identifying the sender is reported to an administrator of the system. Thus, messages are scanned and an indication relating to the content of the message is produced. The indication can be based on lexical analysis (number of times a certain word appeared) of the message, or by grammatical analysis and can include e.g. whether the language used was polite or impolite, threatening, aggressive or apologetic, formal or casual. The levels used by a particular user are mapped against the average for all other users during a certain period of time, for example a month i.e. comparing the measure of the language content used in messages from one user against the measure of the language content used in messages from other users. An aspect of the invention includes disregarding any previous message that appears in the message.

In addition, a first "degraded" status signal and a default "degraded" status signal may be used. These signals can include multiple levels of degradation, and so give a fuller picture of the status of the node.

Using previously provided empirical data, the communication link analyzer may provide a diagnosis of the communication link based on the error type threshold that was met or exceeded and the bit position associated with the error type threshold.

The processing means is configured to: execute transmitter firmware 6; execute a transmitter software application 4; and operate an interface between the transmitter firmware and the transmitter software application, wherein the interface supports one or more operators, each operator acting on one or more elements, wherein the transmitter firmware comprises instructions for: receiving across the interface from the transmitter software application, an operator and an element, associated with a virtual pipe between the transmitter software application and a respective receiver software application; encoding the operator and the element; and using the radio transmitting means to transmit the encoded operator and element by radio, and wherein the receiver comprises radio receiving means 10 and processing means 8, the processing means being configured to: execute receiver firmware 11; execute a receiver software application 9; and operate an interface between the receiver firmware and the receiver software application, wherein the receiver firmware comprises instructions for: using the radio receiving means to receive the encoded operator and element; decoding the operator and element; and sending the operator and the element across the interface to the receiver software application, thereby creating the virtual pipe between the transmitter software application and the receiver software application.
