Preferably a resistor (100, Figure 4B) is provided to simulate the load of a filament bulb if LEDs are provided in a lighting circuit; advantageously, the resistor is bypassed if a filament bulb is used. A MOSFET (63, Figure 6A) may be provided to switch to a high resistance path if a fault, such as a failed bulb or LED or an overload, is detected.

Daraus ergibt sich eine geringere Belastung einer jeden LEDi und somit ein längere Lebensdauer der erfindungsgemäßen Heckleuchte, sowie ein optisch überaus ansprechender Blinkeffekt.

An LD deterioration control unit is provided in the LD deterioration circuit to output a deterioration signal when the electric voltage becomes higher than the reference voltage, so that an alarm, indicating that the LD has deteriorated, is output, and the electric current supplied to the LD is decreased.

A shunt switch is provided in parallel with an output load and is adapted to shunt input terminals of the lamp using pulse width control so as to tune the current through the lighting element. This current control is used to enable compatibility with different ballasts and to provide dimming control. A detection circuit is used to detect an abnormal drive condition of the retrofit lamp and the pulse width control of the shunt switch can then be overridden by holding the shunt switch at a stable state for a certain duration. This prevents overload conditions and avoids DC signals in the event of component failures.

A light emitting diode system allows for high current end user LED matrix applications while mitigating internal damage to control circuitry that may be caused by excess current flow. In one example, multiple switches operate in parallel across an LED. When an overvoltage condition is detected in a first switch, a logic circuit determines those switches programed to operate in parallel and causes them to conduct current. This reduces the amount of current flowing through any one switch and mitigates harm to the device. The parallel configuration of switches may be driven by a single pulse width modulated current. This allows the drive current to be divided between parallel transistors, limiting the damaging effects that can be caused by high currents flowing through the transistors.

Testing functions are provided through use of a programmable microprocessor, the diagnostic circuitry not only monitoring operation of charger/transfer circuitry but also controlling the charger/transfer circuitry to enable alternate strategies for alleviation of a given failure. In emergency mode of a light emitting diode exit sign, a microprocessor-controlled two-stage inverter is employed not only to power the LED light source, but also to efficiently power the microprocessor. Power to the microprocessor is controlled by the microprocessor itself and can therefore be discontinued after appropriate operation until mains power is restored, thereby effectively reducing power consumption to zero. System operation can be flexibly configured through use of a two-wire serial link between modular elements of the system. Incandescent emergency unit fixtures due to high drain rates and output loads require emergency mode operation through use of lead-acid batteries, thereby requiring voltage controlled charging and relay transfer, the self-test and/or self-diagnostic circuitry of the invention used with emergency unit fixtures thus differing in various respects from the circuitry employed for the LED exit signage fixtures and primarily in the need to measure both charge and discharge currents, the circuitry having a larger dynamic range in addition to a capability of measuring both positive and negative currents.

The controller between the light emitting diodes and the traffic signal control unit allows the conventional use of presence or absence of current to monitor lamp operation. A current mirror (18) allows passage of a current proportional to the potential over the terminals of the light emitting diode group forming the lamp during the intervals when they are non-conducting. This ensures continuity of supply to the lamp while the light emitting diodes are non-conducting at the zero crossing of the AC supply. The current can be interrupted by a switch (20) controlled by a circuit monitoring the current in the diodes. If the current falls to a level indicating failure of a known number of the diodes the switch is opened or can be placed under a degraded operation controller (24).
