In the present invention, for a headlamp light distribution control device for a vehicle that changes a light-shielding range by tracking a position of a vehicle ahead and stops the tracking when the vehicle ahead has gained a distance away from the front of a device-equipped vehicle by a tracking limit amount, a lateral margin of the light-shielding range for a tracking delay and the tracking limit amount are appropriately set such that both sufficient glare-proofing and improved visibility by a driver can be achieved. Whether a vehicle ahead is a leading vehicle or an oncoming vehicle is determined (step 105). If the vehicle ahead is a leading vehicle, an optical axis control margin equivalent to the lateral margin of the light-shielding range for a tracking delay is set smaller, and a maximum light-shielding range corresponding to the tracking limit amount is set wider than when the vehicle ahead is an oncoming vehicle (steps 115, 120, 125, 130).

A processor of this device for controlling the light distribution of a vehicle headlight acquires position information of a vehicle-to-the-front from a forward position sensor (12), detects the rotational angle (α) of the vehicle itself beyond a time (t4) at which the forward position sensor (12) detected conditions ahead of the vehicle itself on the basis of signals acquired from behavior sensors (14, 15) for detecting the behavior of the vehicle, corrects the position information of the vehicle-to-the-front on the basis of the detected rotational angle, and controls the light distribution of the vehicle headlight on the basis of the corrected position information of the vehicle-to-the-front. Thereby, a device and method for controlling the light distribution of a vehicle headlight are provided, wherein follow-up lag of the light distribution can be reduced.
