A fastener driving plate assembly includes a projecting portion 412 which slides in the channel, a spring 43 located in a spring cavity (22, fig. 3) and a guiding block 42. In order to feed both long 50 and short (51, fig. 6) fasteners stably and smoothly, an auxiliary plate assembly is installed in the fastener magazine and includes an auxiliary plate 312, a spring 32 and a guiding member 33. The guiding member 33 is pressed onto the spring 32, which is located in an auxiliary cavity (23, fig. 3), and the auxiliary plate is inserted into a groove in the guiding member 33 so that a portion 312 of the auxiliary plate slides in the drive channel and cooperates with the fastener driving assembly.

Class 89(3) [Also in Group XXV] A fastener driving machine comprises a magazine, 19, Fig. 1, and fasteners, e.g. nails 11, slidable along the magazine, recesses 13 in the fastener stems being engaged by a catch 14 in the magazine to hold the fasteners therein. The catch may comprise a leaf spring fixed in the magazine by rivets 16, or a pawl pivoted in the magazine. The nails &c. may be preassembled in strips for insertion in the magazine but where nails are to be inserted singly the recesses are annular grooves, and the nails are inserted into the magazine through the open upper end thereof. In another arrangement, the fasteners are staples 32, Fig. 3, with the outside of either or each limb formed with a recess 33 to engage the catch. In a modification, the inside of either or each limb has the recess and the catch is mounted in a core straddled by the staples.

When the resistance experienced by a sheet stapler is too high a signal is generated. An excess resistance signal reverses the staple driving motor. A low resistance signal is interpreted as the absence of a staple (e.g. after fitting a new staple magazine) and repeats the operations of the staple feeding and driving means without advancing the sheets. Resistance to stapling is detected by measuring the current through the drive motor or the speed or acceleration of a member moving with the staple driver.

Abstract of the Disclosure A cyclical wire stitching machine head includes d reciprocating staple-forming and driving apparatus which is coupled to a wire gripping and feeding mechanism which reciprocates with it. During each cycle of the machine the supply wire is gripped and a predetermined length thereof is fed through a cutter to a holder and severed while, simultaneously, the length severed in the preceding cycle is formed into a staple and driven through the work against a clincher. On the retraction stroke, the holder is rotated to bring the severed length of wire into position for forming and driving during the next drive stroke. A guide tube positively guides and supports the unstraightened wire from a supply coil along a feed path from the input end of the head to the gripping and feeding mechanism. Guide means are also provided for guiding the wire from the cutter to the holder while accommodating rotation of the severed length of wire with the holder.

In the embodiment described the position of the guides 13, 14, and consequently the position of the wire 12, is fixed in relation to the machine frame and the rolls 1, 5 are mounted in a head 15 carried by a slidable bar 16 for displacement relatively to the machine frame in a direction transverse to the direction of feed of the wire. The bar 16 has a rack 20 engaged by a pinion 18 connected to a handwheel by which the adjustment of the position of the rolls 1, 5 is made. Stapling.-In a stapling-machine for stapling the angles of angularly-arranged work-pieces 32, Fig. 5, the staples are driven by two segmental drivers mounted on an axis 16 over the apex of an angular work-support 2, Fig. 2. The drivers are mounted on a carrier 14, which moves in guides 13 and is connected through a spring to a head 19 driven from an eccentric on a power shaft. The carrier 14 is moved downwards till it engages the work; the spring then yields, and the drivers are turned about their pivot by abutments on a bar 29 connected to the head 19. The staple is thus bent about and pressed into the work 32. The points of the staple are clinched by members 35 pivoted to a reciprocating slide 38. On the upward movement of the slide, the members 35 are turned on their pivots, to turn in the ends of the staple, by cam-faces on the work-support. The staples are formed from a strip 87 fed by rollers 88, 89 to a guide 113, through which it passes out over an anvil 60. The strip is cut by a knife 116 reciprocated by a lever 117 operated by a dog 120 connected to the feeding- mechanism. The anvil 60 is mounted on a cam-operated lever, and is normally held out of line of the driving-devices by a spring. A cam-surface on the driving-shaft causes the anvil to be moved below the drivers at the commencement of each driving operation. The wire is held on the anvil by a retainer 64, Fig. 9, provided with a bevelled edge 115<b> to permit the wire to be fed, and pressed by a spring 67 down on the upper face of the anvil. On the downward movement of the carriage 14, the ends of the wire are bent over the anvil bv formers 75, which are adapted to be turned about their pivots to wipe the ends of the wire against the inclined sides of the anvil by shoulders 81. Staple forming arrangement ( 11 ) forming part of a stapler ( 1 ) in which a workpiece ( 6 ), primarily a sheaf of papers, is stapled together. The arrangement includes a bending punch ( 15 ), which is driven by a drive mechanism ( 12,13 ) and which bends elongated staple blanks ( 8 ) over a bending cushion ( 15 ). The staple blanks, which are stored in a magazine ( 7 ) in the stapler and are fed to the bending cushion by an integral feeding device ( 14 ), are bent essentially into a U-shape having a crown ( 24 ) and a first leg ( 25 ) and a second leg ( 26 ), respectively and whereupon the bending punch is withdrawn from the bent staple by the drive mechanism. After the withdrawal of the bending punch from the bent staple, the bent staple is fed by the feeding device to a staple guide channel ( 27 ) in which the staple is driven by a drive blade ( 17 ) incorporated in the stapler into the multi-piece workpiece in order to staple the pieces together. The arrangement ( 11 ) is provided with a first and second leg catcher device 18 and 19, respectively which catch and block the respective staple legs ( 25 and 26 ), preventing them from springing back after bending until the staple has been fed into the staple guide channel.

The staple is then driven out by the driver plate. The pusher is a first pusher, and a second pusher for pressing the legs of the staple toward the face plate is placed next to the first pusher, on the staple drive-out opening side of the first pusher.

A cartridge is drawably provided in a stapler body and has a receiving room for receiving a staple refill, an engagement member with which one side of the staple refill is engaged, and a lock member for locking the engagement member. The lock member has a contact portion that comes in contact with a sheet-like connected staple, discharged from a discharge opening of the staple refill, when the staple refill is received in the receiving room. When the contact portion is in contact with the sheet-like connected staple, the lock member locks the engagement member to prevent separation of the staple refill.

Abstract of the Disclosure Bypass clinching mechanism (50) for a stitching machine (10) which drives a generally U-shaped staple (30) through associated work, includes a housing (70, 51) pivotally mount-ing a pair of clinching members (80) which are inclined with respect to the plane of the staple bight portion (31), the housing defining voids (99) respectively adjacent to the clinching members to receive the excess leg lengths during clinching. A separator plate (65) is disposed between the clinching members and prevents a staple leg from entering the void (99) for the opposite clinching member during the clinching operation. Guide surfaces (68, 75; 63, 67) on the housing and separator plate guide the staple legs to the clinching members.

A feed roller 32 is disposed in a magazine section 1 in a state that the feed roller 32 is in press contact with the lower side of a sheet-like staple fed out of a cartridge 13. A rack is formed in the support means of the magazine section 1. The feed roller 32 is operatively coupled with the magazine section 1 through a one-way clutch gear 34 in mesh with the rack 33. Only when the magazine section 1 separates from the clincher section 4, the one-way clutch gear 34 operates to rotate the feed roller 32 in the staple supply direction. A quantity of rotation of the one-way clutch gear 34 can be adjusted by a gear ratio of the combination of the one-way clutch gear 34 and the rack 33. Therefore, a sufficient quantity of feeding the sheet-like lowest staple is secured. The feed roller 32 is rotated by utilizing the forward/backward motion of the magazine section 1 with respect to the clincher section. Because of this, provision of any special drive means for rotation is not required.

A refill for staples, which can not be removed from a cartridge unless all sheet-type connected staples in a stapler body are delivered. A refill for staples is installed in a detachable manner in a stapler body, and includes a refill body which holds the sheet-type connected staples, and a pressing member which presses the sheet-type connected staples. A delivery port delivering the sheet-type connected staples and a locking plate provided with a locking section which locks a locked section in the stapler body are formed in the refill body. When the sheet-type connected staples are pressed, the pressing member is engaged with the locking plate not to allow rotation of the locking plate, and, when the sheet-type connected staples are not pressed, the pressing member is disengaged from the locking plate to allow rotation of the locking plate. Thereby, the locking section of the locking plate can be removed from the locked section in the stapler body.
