23,607. Helmond, W. F. May 11, [Convention date]. Platen - roller couplings.-A friction clutch for coupling the linespacing wheel to the platen comprises two arms 14 w h i c h are mounted on a disk 11 secured to the platen shaft 2, and can be forced into engagement with a drum 15 secured to the line-spacing wheel 10, by means of levers or bell-cranks 20. The arms abut on a block 17 on the disk, and floating pins or rollers 21, 23 are interposed between the arms and the levers, the arrangement ensuring equal pressure on the arms and enabling the parts to be easily assembled. The block 17 may be formed with a slot adapted to receive a coned adjusting- screw 18. The drum is provided with a detachable cover 41. The arms are of cast iron or other rigid material, and the levers are of elastic material, such as spring steel. The levers are operated by a longitudinally movable cone 25 provided with a knob 26 co-operating with a latch, which locks the clutch when the knob is pushed inwards and is automatically released on withdrawing the knob. The knob is secured to rods 27, 28 which pass through the hub 29 of the thumb-wheel 30 and are provided with buttons 31 adapted to engage a flange 32 on the cone 25. On pushing inwards the knob, a latch 35 pivoted in the hub 29 snaps behind a rod (not shown), which passes through the hub and is provided with a neck engaging the flange 32. The latch then rests in a groove 40 in the rod 27, and on withdrawing the knob, the groove cams the latch upwards, and on engagement of the buttons on the rods 27, 28 with the flange 32, the oone is withdrawn. Platen-roller brakes. - In arrangements in which the release lever for the detent 46, Fig. 2, of the line-spacing wheel 10 serves, when in the release position, as a brake, by being pressed by the detent spring 48 against the platen shaft, the release lever 49 engages the hub of the clutch drum 15 by means of an arcuate bearing 50 and is thus adapted to be readily detached.
