A cassette containing therein heat-sensitive ink ribbon is substantially elongated in shape and it bridges between a pair of side plates forming part of a frame of the printer when detachably mounted in position. The cassette is provided with a supply port at one end and a take-up port at the opposite end and thus the ribbon is lead outside through the supply port and lead inside through the take-up port. And the ribbon is taken up in association with the returning motion of the carriage.

One-way brakes are placed on return rollers in the ribbon path in order to prevent the ribbon from moving with respect to the platen as the carriage is moving from leftto-right across the paper. when the carriage moves from rightto-left in order to return to the left-hand margin, the one-way brakes on the ribbon guide rollers on the carriage apply substantial friction to the inked ribbon and drag the ribbon with the carriage as the carriage returns from right-to-left. In this same motion the return rollers rotate freely to allow the ribbon to move in accordance with the carriage motion.

In all embodiments, deformable drag discs are fixed on opposite sides of the base-tape material spopl and locating and tensioning screws are attached to the base-tape material spool mounting assembly for both adjustably, laterally positioning the rotatably mounted base-tape material spool and adjustably contacting the deformable drag discs to apply tension against the base-tape material spool independent of the overlay-tape material spool in accordance with the required feeding and tracking controls of the base-tape material to the roller mechanism. An ink jet printer with a continuous supply of sheet material from a spool contained within an imaging drum. The sheet material is withdrawn from the interior of the drum by a pair of rollers carried by the drum and removably connected to an external drive system. The sheet material travels around the drum and is held by the rollers in that position. The external drive system is then disconnected allowing the drum to rotate while a printing head scans the surface of the sheet material to produce the desired image. After the imaging process, the drum is stopped in a predetermined position and the rollers connected to the external drive. The rollers are then driven to eject the imaged sheet material while a fresh supply is withdrawn from the interior of the drum and wrapped around its outer surface. The ejected sheet material is sheared by a transverse cutter and the sheared end of the sheet material is withdrawn by the rollers to a length short enough that it does not interfere with the subsequent imaging step. Means are provided for tensioning the sheet material around the drum prior to the next imaging process. The operation of the drive mechanism in three modes, a rest mode while the drum rotates, a paper ejecting mode, and a paper tensioning mode, is controlled by the lateral position of the cutter mechanism.

A large format paper handling assembly has an axially stationary platen which is rotatably mounted on pivotally mounted support arms. The platen is supported on spaced frame supported front guide rollers and rear feed rollers. The off axis rear feed rollers are adapted to be manually and/or automatically line indexed to frictionally feed paper between the rear feed rollers and the platen. Hold down rollers are mounted on a bail extending between spaced paper feed release levers which are pivotally mounted on the frame about the axis of the front guide rollers and are movable away from the platen against the bias of springs. The springs acting through the hold down rollers maintain the platen in frictional engagement with its supporting front guide rollers and rear feed rollers. The pivotal movement of the paper feed release lever withdraws the hold down rollers and also acts to pivot the platen support arms to move the platen away from the front guide rollers and the rear feed rollers. A paper roll of large format paper is peripherally supported on frame mounted rollers and is trained between the platen and the feed rollers and the platen and guide rollers.
