An apparatus for decelerating the drive to a winding device for strip-material, having a length meter for the wound strip and a speed indicator for the strip to be wound, includes a computer which is adjustable to the nominal length of the strip of material and which brings the drive to a halt, at a predetermined rate of deceleration, as a function of the nominal length and of the instantaneous speed of the strip. The rate of deceleration is determined by two different curves, one of which would produce less, and the other more, than the nominal length if one or the other of these curves were to be exclusively effective after commencement of deceleration. The computer adjusts the rate of deceleration, in constant alternation, in accordance with the curves, changing over from one to the other as soon as it determines that the nominal length will be exceeded or not attained at the instantaneous prevailing rate of deceleration.

The rate at which the material is rolled up is controlled. This may be done by controlling the revs. of the winding roller or the diameter of the roll. If the roll diameter changes, the roll revs may change too. The roll diameter may be measured by a feeler or a sensor. The rolling-up rate may also be measured by a sensor. The rolling-up rate can be measured from the number of revolutions of a roller lying against the material. In the case of a hydrostatic drive control may be achieved by an adjustable flow divider.

The mechanism coils non-elastic strip material onto a driven roll. In alternating periods, the drive mechanism(5) generates low and high tension in the material, pulling it tight after winding onto the roll initially. In the first period the tension can be so slight that the material lies loose on the roll. The drive can be via a slipping clutch, with driving and pressure plates with dogs facing towards each other. These form a positive drive system until a predetermined maximum load is reached. Meihofer for VARIABLE RATIO WINDER Abstract A web winder of the center wind type drives the web roll through a controllable variable speed mechanical transmission whose input shaft is turned by a variable slip torque modulating device whose torque coupling varies in accordance with the output of a web tension sensor upstream from the web roll to immediately change the angular velocity of the roll to compensate for sudden tension upsets in the web. The amount of slip in that device is detected and compared with a selected reference slip to develop an error signal for controlling the gear-in ratio of the transmission which slows the angular velocity of the roll to compensate for the gradual web tension increase caused by increasing roll size. Thus the winder's speed characteristics are matched at the input of the transmission to the clutch characteristics at all roll diameters so that the winder requires only a minimum size torque modulating device for given web speed and tension conditions.
