A system and method for regulating the root mean square (RMS) voltage delivered to a load by an alternating current (AC) electrical circuit having a line voltage. To avoid radio frequency interference (RFI), the load is disconnected from the AC electrical circuit when energy stored in the load is at or near zero and is reconnected when the line voltage is at or near zero. Inductive loads are disconnected when the line current is at or near zero while capacitive loads are disconnected when the line voltage is at or near zero. The duration of the disconnection does not exceed one half-cycle of the fundamental frequency. Disconnections alternate between removing positive voltage half-cycles and negative voltage half-cycles to avoid a direct current (DC) bias. A system incorporating digital logic elements is provided for implementing the method and for detecting whether the load is inductive or capacitive.

A circuit for determining load type of an electrical AC load that is receiving power from an AC power source through an AC power line features an electronic switch connected in series between the AC power source and the AC load. The circuit also features a triggering device, which provides a trigger signal to the electronic switch, and a measuring device, which obtains a reading of a voltage across the terminals of the electronic switch. The components of the circuit are arranged so that, within an AC half cycle, the trigger signal effects the electronic switch to progress through one conduction cycle. After an end of the AC half cycle, the measuring device obtains the reading, which has a value based on which the load type of the AC load is determined. A related method for determining the load type is also disclosed.

Gate control of the thyristor 14 is effected from the collector of a transistor 23 which is turned ON or OFF by a control-function signal applied to its base from a controller 9. DC power for the transistor 23 and the controller 9 is supplied from the rectifier 10 across a capacitor 21 that is shunted by a zener diode 22 and charged via a diode 26 and resistor 27 by current drawn from the path through the thyristor 14. The circuit may power an electric motor, for example, of a heating system, instead of the lamp 2.

Durch das Einfügen einer weiteren Drossel in den Lastkreis wird der Widerstand für höhere Frequenzen größer und damit die Belastung des Senders herabgesetzt. Die Verwendung eines Ferritkernes für die zusätzliche Drossel ermöglicht eine relativ große Induktivität bei kleinen Abmessungen. The control system consists of a transmitter apparatus and a receiver apparatus. The receiver apparatus in turn generates a command signal that controls the slave device's operation.

Static power switching for circuits supplied from an a.c. source. The thyristor based bistable switching is achieved with a minimum of parasitic transients without the use of separate attenuating filters etc. or conduction maintainance circuits. The circuit is based on the use of a classic full-wave diode bridge with a parallel Zener diode across which the main thyristor and a series dropping resistor are connected. Continuing thyristor conduction is achieved by a CR chain across the gate. The charge on the capacitor is maintained by a further thyristor whose gate is controlled from a diode-unijunction transistor circuit.

The dimmer circuit has a triac (1) in series with an inductor (30) and the lamp (1) across the supply poles (10, 11). The gate of the triac is connected to the tapping of a voltage divider comprising two resistors (32, 33) in series with a capacitor (31) shunting the triac and the inductor. The voltage divider's tapping is connected to a conventional control circuit (3) containing a diac. The capacitor (31) and the inductor (30) form a circuit that suppresses unwanted oscillations. The capacitor is in series with the voltage divider's resistor instead of being connected directly across the triac and inductor as in some previous designs. The resistors in the voltage divider limit the gate current.

Apparatus and methods for AC power regulation for a wide range of complex capacitive and inductive loads which provide substantial reduction in power consumption while also providing a leading power factor. The system is self-adjusting for a wide range of loads and can reduce power consumption by 25 percent in lighting loads while producing minimal reduction in light output. The system utilizes a main switch (17) consisting of back-to-back MOS controlled Thyristor devices (MCTs) and a parallel capacitor bank (70) in series with the load (4). The main switch is initially turned off slightly in advance of the load current zero crossing, and this in combination with the capacitor bank (70) allows power to be reduced in a low noise fashion. The turn-off time is advanced gradually to regulate power at a target reduced level. At the target power level, load phase angle is measured and maintained to control the power savings ratio.

The system includes a control unit (1) for supplying a load (10,11,12) and a processing unit (2) connected to the control unit (1). The system has means for determining the polarity of a supply voltage between supply feeds (5,7) and the processing unit (2) and has a switch (17), connected at its output terminals to the processing circuit (2), which is controlled by an intermittent half waveform having two polarities so as to reduce an average supply voltage (v) supplied to the load. The processing circuit controls the closing of the switch (17) by using a pre-determined number (21,22) of half waves during a cycles having an odd number of consecutive half waves (21,22,23,g1,g2,g3). The system has an opto-coupler (15) whose input diode is connected through a resistance (16) between the supply lines (5,7). The outputs of the opto-coupler are connected to the inputs of the processing circuit to provide signals representing the half wave polarities of the voltage. The load is controlled by the triac (17), whose conduction is controlled by a second opto-coupler (18) whose output is connected in series with a resistance (19) between the trigger and anode of the triac. The opto- coupler is preferably of the type optotriac (rtm). If used as a timer with pre-set extinction the half waves suppressed during the pre-set stage do not disturb the electrical network with continuous or parasitic components.
