A method and system for analyzing the state of a dielectric material is disclosed. The dielectric material is determined to be in a state, S, by determining a similarity or dissimilarity between: (a) a first set of impedance values derived from excitation of a capacitor having the dielectric material disposed between electrodes for the capacitor, and (b) a second set of predetermined corresponding impedance values indicative of the state S. For each of a plurality of electrical frequencies, there are corresponding impedance values in the first and second sets. Each such impedance values is one of a conductance and a capacitance value for the dielectric material. Thus, within a time period sufficiently short so that the dielectric material is expected to remain in a same state throughout the time period, each of the electrical frequencies is used to excite the capacitor, and corresponding response impedance values are derived that provide an impedance “snap shot” of the dielectric material. Accordingly, a most likely state for the dielectric material is determined from a similarity or dissimilarity between the snap shot (i.e. the first set hereinabove), and the second of predetermined corresponding impedance values for the state.

The invention relates to a method for detecting precipitation, especially rain and fog, on a windscreen, which is not based on an active illumination of the windscreen or a measurement of the reflectivity, but on a camera using a plurality of adjacent pixels for detecting an image of a target area. Said target area is located in the surroundings of the vehicle, and the windscreen is thus represented in a blurred manner. In the event of a blurred representation, raindrops or fog on the windscreen produce a soft-focus effect in the image. The sharpness of the image and/or the difference in contrast of adjacent pixels is evaluated and the presence of precipitation is detected therefrom, the image is then preferably subjected to a two-dimensional Fourier transformation and the spatial frequencies are evaluated. A first image is recorded especially for a low contrast target area, a windscreen wiper passing over the windscreen in the visual region of the camera or a heating process is activated, and a second image is then recorded, and both images are evaluated according to changes.

A security system comprises a host system, a plurality of master controllers and a plurality of sub-controllers, wherein each sub-controller is assigned a specific master controller as well as alternate master controllers for communication access upon failure of the primary master controller. The host, master controller and sub-controllers are all coupled by a series of primary communication networks and paths and have multiple alternative communication network paths which function should there be a failure of the primary communication network. The host system comprises system and application software, data storage devices and communication ports to support the application requirements of the master controller, sub-controller network and access control devices attached thereto necessary to support a fault tolerant network. The system is configured with backup communication networks between the components so that upon failure of one or more components or communication paths the function of the failed component or path is assumed by alternative predesignated components or paths such that the operations of the system is not interrupted.

The present invention provides an improved extracardiac indifferent electrode configuration for implantable medical devices that overcomes the deficiencies of known unipolar and bipolar cardiac sensing and pacing systems. In particular, the present invention provides an indifferent electrode configuration wherein a subcutaneous extracardiac electrode is advantageously positioned so as to provide a truly indifferent return or reference electrode that does not inadvertently stimulate torso muscle and is not subject to detecting myopotentials generated by adjacent torso muscle. In addition, by being placed outside the heart, the indifferent electrode allows the intracardiac catheter to maintain a low profile, i.e., allows the catheter to be as small as possible, and does not generate metallic ions or cause degradation of catheter materials by generating such ions.

Esp. for small scale sporadically loaded use e.g. in hotels, motels, ships etc., the raw sewage is fed through a coarse sieve into a main reservoir which has an air inlet, a recycling loop with pump, and a set of sloping waterfall plates for oxygenation. From this tank the aerated sewage is lifted by a bucket dredger into a mixer tank, also with waterfall plates into which flocculant/coagulant chemical is also fed in metered quantities, mixing taking place on the plates. The mixt. falls onto a consumable paper belt filter with regulated speed drive demand controlled through which the filtrate falls into a sump. Plant is more effective than biological type for irregular feed.
