A bait container, particularly useful with crustacean (lobster or crab) traps is formed with an apertured side wall in which the apertures comprise at least 35% of the surface area of the side wall. The apertures for any container are usually uniform in size and the range of aperture size is from about 250 to about 1000 microns. The size and distribution of the apertures prolongs bait life due to the controlled release of bait from the container and the added protection against unwanted predators such as arthopods. Furthermore the bait container permits the use of emulsified or minced bait produced from previously undesirable material, such as discards and non-edible fish parts taken from the fish processing industry.

A fishing lure. The lure includes a head, body and tail giving the general appearance of a fish. The body is flexible and hollow, and defines a compartment into which bait is placed. A plurality of small openings are formed on the upper and rearward quarter of the body in a region where such body tapers downwardly to join the tail. A flap member at the forward portion of the body provides the closure means for the compartment. The operative part of a hook extends through one of the small openings so that the barb of the hook is positioned in vertically spaced relation above the body, rearwardly of the flap. String-shaped pieces of bait extend through the small openings to attract fish.

A biodegradable hydrogel has been made based on high concentrations of whey protein isolate (WP1). WP1 gels of different compositions were fabricated by thermally inducing gelation of high-concentration suspensions of protein, and characterized for compressive strength and modulus, hydration swelling and drying properties, mechanical behavior change due to polysaccharide additives, and intrinsic pore network structure. The gels were shown to be compatible with bone cells and could be used as bone tissue scaffolds. In addition, WP1 fibers were produced by electrospinning. Several additives could be incorporated into the WPI gels, including structural additives, growth factors, amino acids, etc. The WP1 hydrogels can be made with glycerol to increase flexibility and stability. The hydrogels could be used for tissue regeneration, food protection, controlled-release applications (including drug encapsulation, dietary supplement release, attractant release in lures, nutrient release to plants (fertilizers), column packing for compound separation, and membrane development.
