It would be advisable to provide a device that does not require any additional sensors or control units, which is cheap to manufacture, easy to operate and highly reliable. The machine for the production of multi-segment rods for use in the tobacco industry contains: at least one feeding module for placing segments in a chain, one after the other, on a receiving conveyor for transporting segments along a given transportation path in the direction of a format conveyor; a moving module for moving segments from the receiving conveyor to the format conveyor; a format conveyor for transporting segments to the wrapper; a format device for wrapping the wrapper around a chain of segments to form a continuous rod; a cutting head for cutting a continuous rod into multi-segment rods; and an offset mechanism for deflecting the receiving conveyor relatively to a given transportation path to the cleaning position, wherein segments do not contact any of feeding modules during transportation on the receiving conveyor. Apparatus and method for combining components for smoking articles

There is provided an apparatus and method for combining two or more different components (103, 203;105, 205;107a, 107b, 207) for the production of smoking articles. At least one of the components (103,203) is non-cleanly-cuttable, that is, cannot be cleanly cut with conventional cutting means, for example because it is prone to splinter or fragment. The method comprises the steps of : feeding a stream of components along a moving delivery path (200); compacting the stream of components into groups of two or more different components, each group corresponding to a discrete smoking article, wherein the components within a group abut one another and wherein there is a predefined space between a leading group of components and a trailing group of components; wrapping the components in a web of material; and cutting the web of material in each space between groups of components.

Filter component cutting system

The present invention discloses a filter component cutting system (10), comprising a supply hopper (14) of elongate filter rods (12) and a cutting drum (22) with spaced apart flutes (20) on an exterior surface of the drum for receiving the elongate filler rods. A transfer mechanism (16, 18) receives the elongate filter rods from the supply hopper and delivers the rods to the flutes on the cuttingdrum. At least one cutter (30) adjacent the cutting drum functions to cut the filter rods in to individual filter components as the cutting drum rotates. A process using the system is also disclosed.
