An enhanced personal cooling garment has an inner layer and outer layer that define a confined space or bladder therebetween for containing liquid water. The inner and outer layer are thin materials that are impermeable to both air and liquid water yet permeable to water vapour. The garment is worn in a manner such that the innermost layer is in direct contact with the wearer's skin. The liquid water between the layers diffuses as vapour through the outer layer; it removes latent heat required for evaporation hence provides cooling to the human body. As both layers of the garment are permeable to water vapour, sweat produced by the wearer can diffuse through the innermost layer, where it will then condense into liquid. When worn beneath an air-cooling garment that distributes cool; dry air over the body, the rate of evaporation increases, resulting in even greater enhancement of cooling of the wearer.

The apparatus can be made to heat or cool the body or to act as a thermal buffer to protect the wearer from changing environmental conditions. The apparatus may also include an external thermal insulation layer and/or an internal thermal control layer to regulate the rate of heat exchange between the composite and the skin of the wearer. Other embodiments of the apparatus also provide 1) a path for evaporation or direct absorption of perspiration from the skin of the wearer for improved comfort and thermal control, 2) heat conductive pathways within the material for thermal equalization, 3) surface treatments for improved absorption or rejection of heat by the material, and 4) means for quickly regenerating the thermal storage capacity for reuse of the material. Applications of the composite materials are also described which take advantage of the composite's thermal characteristics. The examples described include a diver's wet suit, ski boot liners, thermal socks, gloves and a face mask for cold weather activities, and a metabolic heating or cooling blanket useful for treating hypothermia or fever patients in a medical setting and therapeutic heating or cooling orthopedic joint supports.

The cooling garment includes an inner layer of a thermoplastic polymer material that is liquid impermeable and vapor permeable, an outer liquid permeable reinforcing layer such as a web of thermoplastic polymer fibers, and a central absorbent layer that contains a stabilized matrix of about 55% to 95% cellulosic fibers and from about 5% to 45% thermoplastic polymer fibers. The layers are bonded together and the absorbent layer is bonded to at least one of the other layers by regionally applying sufficient energy to the layers wherein the thermoplastic polymers melt and resolidify to form inter-fiber bonds. The cooling garment can be saturated with water or other liquids and provide the wearer with relief from the heat such as may be achieved by evaporative cooling.

A multilayer composite material and method for evaporative cooling of a person employs an evaporative cooling liquid that changes phase from a liquid to a gaseous state to absorb thermal energy. The evaporative cooling liquid is absorbed into a superabsorbent material enclosed within the multilayer composite material. The multilayer composite material has a high percentage of the evaporative cooling liquid in the matrix. The cooling effect can be sustained for an extended period of time because of the high percentage of phase change liquid that can be absorbed into the superabsorbent. Such a composite can be used for cooling febrile patients by evaporative cooling as the evaporative cooling liquid in the matrix changes from a liquid to a gaseous state to absorb thermal energy. The composite can be made with a perforated barrier material around the outside to regulate the evaporation rate of the phase change liquid. Alternatively, the composite can be made with an imperveous barrier material or semipermeable membrane on one side to prevent the liquid from contacting the person's skin. The evaporative cooling liquid in the matrix can be recharged by soaking the material in the liquid. The multilayer composite material can be fashioned into blankets, garments and other articles.

Cooling devices are provided to reduce a person's temperature by evaporative, convective, and/or conductive cooling. Air heated by the person's body exits the device upward through evaporation openings in the connecting membranes. The foregoing device, or different variations thereof, may be modified for use in conductive cooling by adding an absorbent sheet beneath the base sheet, or substituting the absorbent sheet for the base sheet itself. This device directs air upon the wetted absorbent sheet to cool this layer, and thereby conductively cool the patient's skin in thermal contact with the absorbent sheet. As one example, this device may be configured in serpentine shape, with multiple winding segments. The device may include body-contour slits extending inward from the perimeter, permitting the device to conform to a person's legs and outstretched arms. Cooling devices may also include optional features to enhance thermal contact between the absorbent sheet and the person's skin, and/or to prevent water runoff from the cooling field.

Described herein is a new human body cooling suit that is comprised of a number of flexible heat pipes and a (or a number of) phase-change material (PCM) module (or modules). A lower section (with reference to the gravity field) of the flexible heat pipe is sandwiched between the outer cover and the inner lining materials. An upper section of the heat pipe runs through the PCM module. The shell of the said flexible heat pipe can be a corrugated metal tube, a corrugated plastic tube, or a smooth plastic tube, depending on specific applications. The said outer cover is made of thermal insulating materials that shield off the heat from the environment to the human body. When a human being, who wears this cooling suit, is exposed to a very hot environment, the flexible heat pipe section embedded in the suit materials absorbs the heat that is dissipated from the human body, and transfers it to the said PCM module where the heat is stored in the PCM module via the change of phase. Since the PCM is chosen such that it has a melting temperature close to the normal temperature range of the human body and a large latent heat of melting, and the heat pipe has an extremely high effective thermal conductance, the human body temperature can be maintained at a temperature close to normal, regardless of the environment a person encounters. Three types of PCM modules, in which the thawed PCM can be easily replaced, are also described.

Thermoregulatory apparel includes garments for close-fitting, skin-contacting wear having, in preferred embodiments, a base fabric of COOLMAX high moisture evaporation fabric having one or more insulating panels of THERMAX or THERMASTAT hollow core fiber fabric having moisture-wicking capability and applied to the inner side of the garment for skin contact at selected areas of the body where muscle protection is desired. The insulating panels maintain body heat in the protected muscles while evaporative cooling is encouraged by wicking of perspiration away from the body for evaporation from the outer COOLMAX fabric. Alternative fabric choices and various garment combinations may be utilized.
