A roughing system includes a roughing machine and an imaging apparatus. The roughing machine roughs an upper of a shoe along a path to form a rough trace thereon. The imaging apparatus includes a camera module and a processing module. The camera module is moved parallel to the path and repeatedly captures an image of a portion of the upper having a segment of the rough trace thereon each time when one of a first condition that the camera module has been moved by a predetermined length and a second condition that the camera module has been moved for a predetermined time duration is satisfied. The processing module receives the images respectively of different portions of the upper that are sequentially captured by the camera module, and is configured to generate a panoramic image based on the images. 1. The arrangement has devices which first exert a relatively weak closing force on the claw components such that these come into the gripping position. On relative movement between the strips and the gripper, the pinching edge moves between the claws. Detector devices belong to the claws and on increase in the claw closing force they are so firmly moved together that the edge of the upper is firmly gripped when a given part of the edge is between the claws. The detector devices contain light delivery devices to deliver a light beam from one claw to the other and light determining devices to evaluate the light passage through the claws. The arrangement is such that the light beam is cut off in the case that the pinching edge is in a section exceeding a given value between the claws while the light passes between the claws when the pinching edge between the claws does not exceed a given value.

941,309. Shoe upper conforming machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd., and G. C. BARTON. March 1, 1960 [March 2, 1959], No. 7088/59. Heading A3B. In a shoe upper conforming machine, having work-supporting means, a plurality of grippers, toe wipers, and ball-grippers and wipers, clamping members are provided to engage the upper at opposite sides of the share prior to the grippers releasing their hold for the over-wiping operation. The clamping members comprise, at each side of the last, a pair of clamps 8, 9 mounted on arms 11, 12 and moved by fluid pressure operated means. Arms 11 and 12 are connected to a cylinder member 18 slidable along a piston rod 20, which is integral with support bracket 6. Fluid pressure urges cylinder 18 along rod 20 to carry clamps 8, 9 into engagement with the upper. Fluid passes through an axial bore 22 into an extended bore portion of member 18 and through part 30 into enlarged bore portion 32. Clamp arms 11 and 12 are connected to cylinder 18 by pairs of parallel links 36 and 38 to enable clamps 8 and 9 to engage varying contours of lasts. Faces 39 on cylinder 18 limit the movement of links 36, 38. Clamp 9 is mounted for arcuate movement lengthwise of a shoe and has an arcuate face 42 which abuts an arcuate face in arm 12. Clamp 8 is mounted for rotatable adjustment about the axis of rod 20, a pinion 44, integral with collar 34, meshing with a worm rotatable by an adjusting knob 50. A pin 52, carried by cylinder 18, engages slot 54 in collar 34 to rotate cylinder 18 when knob 50 is rotated. Upward movement of ballwipers-support arm 70 about a shaft 3 causes upward movement of the clamping members, through the engagement of a pin 72 with a slot 74 in a link 76. The other end of link 76 is attached to the eccentric stem of an adjusting screw 78 which gives heightwise adjustment of the clamping members relative to the ball wipers and the shoe. [Published under Section 91 of the Act.] [Addition to 3586/09.] Lasting.-Relates to the method of lasting described in Specification 18,848/07. The " outer sewing " with which the edges of the upper is treated prior to lasting is replaced, according to one form, by a series of " dog " pincers " distributed around the upper. According to another arrangement, this sewing is retained, and the lasting-cable is attached to the sewing by a series of hooks. The " dog " pincers " are shown in Fig. 38, and comprise a clamp carrying a hook 171 with which the lasting-cable is engaged. Fig. 39 shows the double hook used in the alternative method. The last-support is modified as follows. Each vertically-movable member 26 carries a plate 155, in which slide a number of members 157, the outer ends of which are squared to form " pushers "; in another arrangement, these ends carry rollers 169 to guide the lasting-cable along the contour of the last. Each of the pushers is pressed towards the last by a spring, encirling a rod 161 projecting from the plate 155, and arranged between this plate and a lug on the underside of the " pusher " 157. A lever 164, pivoted to the plate 155, and, as described, pulled downwards by a spring, carries a number of blades 166, which engage racks on the upper faces of the " pushers " to hold them in position. By means of a screw and hand-wheel 31, the plate 155 and its attached parts may be urged towards the last. The metallic lasting- cable 52 is strained by means of a screw and hand-wheel 168 supported by a bracket 167 carried by the members 26. In place of the plate 155 and its associated parts, the members 26 may each carry two rollers, around which the lasting cable is passed.

4058. Bates, A., and British United Shoe Machinery Co. Feb. 17. Boot-sole sewing and lasting machines.-The uppers of veldtschoen &c. are lasted and simultaneously permanently stitched to the soles. The upper and the sole, assembled on the last, are brought up to a work-support F, which presses the upper into the angle between the sole a and the last c. A welt strip d is fed into position over the out-turned edge of the upper through a guide-passage in the work-support. The upper is gripped and pulled by grippers G, G', and while the upper is held under tension, an awl C moves to penetrate the welt, the upper, and the margin of the sole. The work, grippers, and awl are then moved by the travel of a feed-slide H into a position for the work to be operated upon by the stitching-mechanism. A presser L clamps the work to the work-support until the feed slide is operated; but the clamping pressure may be released in part or altogether during the pulling operation. After the work has been fed by the slide, the presser L descends again, and holds the work until the stitch is made, the grippers, awl, and feed slide returning to their original positions. The upper may be released from the grippers before the completion of the feed movement. The lower jaw G<1> of the grippers is formed on a bar G<2> supported at one end by a vertical link G<3> pivoted at its lower end to the feed-slide H. The bar G<2> and the link G<3> are connected by pivoted ears G<30> provided with a stem rotatable in a bore in the link. The other end of the bar G<2> is supported by a lever J pivoted to the frame of the machine and connected to the bar G<2> by a universal joint. Abstract Shoe Support A shoe support comprises toe support means (34) and heel support means (30), the toe support means being mounted for adjusting movement relative to the heel support means in directions extending lengthwise, widthwise and heigthwise of the bottom of a shoe supported by the shoe support. The heel support means (30) comprises a last pin (32') mounted for limited rocking movement abut an axis (412) extending lengthwise of the shoe bottom, the last pin being supported on a support member (420) which is angularly displaceable on a support rod (28), the arrangement being such that the rocking axis (412) of the last pin (32') can be adjusted angularly on the support rod, thus to locate said axis (412) substantially in the heel-to-toe plane of the shoe, as determined by the position of the toe support means (34). In this way, the shoe is supported in a more stable manner for operations to be performed thereon, e.g. a heel seat lasting operation.

The heel support is in contact with the inside surface of the shoe when it is turned upside down for heel attaching by a vertically acting tool. The machine senses the distance between the toe and the heel for correct adjustment of the support system by photoelectric cells supported by the toe supporting column. The light bram of these photoelectric system arrangements are directed at 90 deg. to the plane which contains the centreline of the heel supporting column and the toe supporting column. Light signals are fed into a discriminator for evaluating and generating a signal for adjusting the shoe toe tip support. This arrangement does not require a great deal of attention on operation. Shoes of any size can be passed through this seam without regard to their size.

Each roller (232; 232′) has a helical rib arrangement (294) which, when rotated while in pressing engagement with the shoe bottom, effects an inwiping movement on the lasting marginal portions of the shoe upper. The rollers (232; 232′) are inclined to the longitudinal centre line of the shoe support, with their free ends directed heelwardly; the acute angle subtended between each centre line and the roller axis of rotation is in the order of 50 to 62°, preferably 57°. The lasting rollers (232; 232′) are of non-metallic material, preferably synthetic polymer or ceramic material, and have a single helical rib the pitch of which is in the range of 10 to 15 mm.

[Cognate Application, 20,802/13.] [Addition to 9983/08.] Pulling-over.-Relates to tip-measuring apparatus for indicating the position of the tip seam in relation to the last, as described in the parent Specification. The invention is illustrated as applied to a pulling-over machine of the type described in Specification 12,304/03. The device is carried by parallel links 6, which are pivoted at 8 to the rearwardly-projecting end portions of a bracket 10 fastened at 12 to the machine frame. The links are normally held up by springs 14 against a stop, as shown in dotted lines on Fig. 2. The lower ends of the links are connected by a bar 16 extended on one side to form a handle 7 and fitted with a toe-abutment plate 20. A measuring- plate 25, extending at right-angles to the abutment plate and adjustable by a screw 24, is mounted on the front face of the bar 16 at one side of the abutment plate. The measuring-plate, which is graduated, carries a sickle-shaped plate 26, the end of which is in a position where it may engage the rear edge of the tip seam. In operation, the measuring-device is pulled down by the handle 7, the plate 26 first bearing against the shoe and causing the bar 16 to turn slightly in its'mounting against the pull of a spring 30 until the toe-abutment plate engages the shoe. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the measuring-device is carried by links 6, which can slide longitudinally along pivots 8, and which also carry rolls 27 engaging in slots 13 in cam plates 9 adjustably mounted on the bracket 10. When the tip measurer is pulled down, the cams compel it to follow a path by which the toe of the shoe is cleared.

Abstract A composite band for use in a footwear-forming machine. The composite band includes an elongated pad formed to have a bight portion and a pair of legs extending outwardly from the bight portion. A flexible elongated metal is secured at the outer surface of the elongated pad. The composite band is subjected to flexing forces whereby, in the footwear forming process, it is repeatedly bent to conform to the shape of the footwear and then relaxed to an unflexed condition. The metal skip contains three (or more) spaced loops, one at each leg and one at the bight portion, to prevent undue stress during flexure. The loops serve also to permit inwardly-directed forces to be applied to the composite band.

[Class 17 (i)] The machine for trimming marginal material from the toe portions of uppers after pulling- over and before lasting disclosed in the parent Specification is modified. Shoe clamping means co-operate with the heel end of the shoe, and a manual control therefor sets the machine into power operation by a further movement. The shear support for the toe end marginal material comprises articulated blocks forming a recess with means for adjusting them so that the width of the recess may conform to the size and style of the shoe. A support is provided for the toe of the shoe. The pivoted fingers laying the margin over its support are arranged to be moved automatically forward above the shoe from a rearward inoperative position, then to be lowered into proximity to the shoe, and thereafter to be pressed down and moved rearwardly to perform the laying-over operation. A thin flexible steel strip acts as a' shear member for the knife. The shearing block comprises two articulated blocks 59, 61, each recessed to receive a lining member 63, a flexible metal strip 81 being clamped between the parts. The strip is vertically adjustable so that it may act as a shearing member correctly to co-operate with the knife. The two halves of the upper margin supporting surface are adjusted to the desired width of toe by a right and left hand screw 91. Arc-shaped guides 89 on a base plate 49 engage guide-ways on the blocks to restrain the blocks during adjustment. Shoe positioning means comprise an abutment plate 109 extending across the shoe bottom, and an abutment finger 111 engaging the shoe bottom near its toe end. Lasting.-In a lasting-machine of the type described in Specification 12,364/94, in which the shoe-supporting means comprise a toe-rest c and a heel-pin 2, and the lasting-mechanisms include .toe-lasting plates mounted for vertical actuation to rub the upper upwardly along the sides of the toe portion of a last, the heel-pin 2 is provided with a rearwardly inclined arm 20, the upper face of this arm engaging with the last at a substantial distance from the pin. The arm forms the sole vertical support for the heel part of the last. The heel pin 2 may be mounted nearer to one side than the other of its holder 4, Fig. 3, and the holder itself removably mounted in its slide 5, so that, by reversing the pin and the holder in the holder and the slide respectively, the pin may be adjusted for a different-sized last. The pin is vertically adjusted by a screw 18. The heel-pin is mounted in the holder on a longitudinal pivot pin 19, which permits lateral tipping to accommodate unsymmetrical lasts.

In a heel attaching machine a work support for a last 34 which carries a positioning plate 54 at the crown face of the heel portion comprises an abutment face engaged by the positioning plate, a peg arranged to be received in a socket opening 36 in the crown face of the last and preferably possesses the following:- 1 a yieldable latch which co-operates with the positioning plate; 2 two members between which are clamped two faces of the positioning plate which are disposed at either side of and at an equal distance from a reference plane of the last; 3 means arranged to engage the positioning plate rearwardly and toe wardly of the socket; 4 a retractable peg. Two work supports 20, 21<SP>1</SP> are described. Both supports are mounted pivotally at their upper ends on a slide 112 which moves in a guideway 114. Means comprising a rotary disc 148, multi-length abutments 150 and stop screw 152 allow the support to be positioned in guideway 114 for any size of last. Handle 130 and associated members clamp the slide in guideway 114. The supports are held in their loading and unloading positions by spring pressed plungers 138, 138<SP>1</SP> (not shown) engaging in notches 140, 140<SP>1</SP> (not shown) formed in bosses 110. Support 20 comprises a post 104 upon which is mounted the last holding mechanism. The mechanism comprises a latch 164, a fixed abutment 174 and levers 180, 190 which in their initial positions are pivoted away from engagement with positioning plate 54 when it is presented to the holder. The latch 164 and abutment 174, however, co-operate with lip 66 and face 64 of plate 54 respectively. With peg 22 in socket 36 the support is swung towards the heel attaching position whence a cam 256 triggers a switch and solenoid valve 234 so that pressure fluid enters cylinders 198, 210. 1519145 Lasting shoes &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO 26 Aug 1975 [27 Aug 1974] 37307/74 Heading A3B A side and heel seat lasting machine has a last mounted upon a support 15, 16, &c and powered side lasting rolls 1 with helical ribs, the support 15, &c, the lasting rolls and heel seat wipers 3 being relatively movable to move the rolls along the edges of a shoe assembly upon the last and to position the shoe relative to the heel seat wipers ready for the heel seat lasting operation. The side lasting operation may be performed either before or after the heel seat wipers have functioned. Initially, a pneumatic servo 80 is energized to slide a carriage 7 leftwards of Fig. 1 along bars 9 to the position shown, where it is retained by a lock device 85. A shoe assembly is placed upon the support 15, &c. A pneumatic servo 39 is energized to pivot the shoe support 15, &c upwards about a pivot pin 35 to engage the heel of the shoe assembly with a heel band 30. A servo 47 is energized to engage a locating foot 40 with the shoe insole. A jack post 19 mounting the shoe support 15, &c is held in its vertical position by a bar lock 20. The heel band 110 closes about and centralizes the shoe assembly. A cylinder 62 is energized to swing a lever 52, 54 about its fulcrum 56 and engage a sensor 69 with the toe of the shoe assembly, and a pneumatic servo 74 is energized to engage a toe pad 72 with the shoe toe. A stop rod 90 has now been positioned so that after withdrawal of the locating foot 40, the servo 80 draws the carriage 7, shoe assembly, &c rightwards of Fig. 1 to a position determined by the lock 85, which is under the control of the stop rod. Adhesive is applied to the lasting margins through nozzles 2 carried by arms 26 turning about a pivot 28 under the control of servos 84. WIPING METHOD AND LASTING MACHINE-SHOE ASSEMBLY COMBINATION USED THEREWITH ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The wiping of the heel portion of an upper margin against the corresponding portion of an insole by supporting bottom-up on a support a last having prongs extending upwardly from its bottom with the upper mounted on the last and the insole loosely located on its bottom, then raising the support so as to bring the insole into engagement with a hold down to thereby clamp the shoe assembly formed by the last, upper and insole between the support and the hold down at a level suitable for heel wiping and to thereby cause the hold down to press the insole against the prongs so as to restrain the insole against movement on the last bottom, and then wiping the heel portion of the upper margin against the insole.

Composite band for a footwear-forming machine

A composite band (1, 1A) for use in a footwear-forming machine. The composite band includes an elongated pad (6) formed to have a bight (6A) portion and a pair of legs (6B, 6C) extending outwardly from the bight portion (6A). A flexible elongated metal strip (7, 7A) is secured at the outer surface of the elongated pad (6). The composite band (1, 1A) is subjected to flexing forces whereby, in the footwear forming process, it is repeatedly bent to conform to the shape of the footwear and then relaxed to an unflexed condition. The metal strip (7, 7A) contains three (or more) spaced loops (9A-E), one at each leg (6B, 6C) and one at the bight portion (6A) to prevent undue stress during flexure. The loops (9A-E) serve also to permit inwardly-directed forces to be applied to the composite band (1, 1 A).
