A ratchet assembly includes an elongated shaft, a gear housing, a ratcheting member, and an arm. The elongated shaft can have a gear and be supported by the gear housing to allow rotation about a primary axis of the shaft. The ratcheting member can mount in the housing and be biased toward the gear to engage with the gear hindering relative rotation about the shaft axis in a first direction and allowing rotation about the shaft axis in a second direction opposite the first direction. The ratcheting member can rotatably mount within the housing about a second axis. The arm can couple to the gear housing in a first configuration to provide torque to rotate the housing about the shaft axis in the first direction when the arm is pressed downward. The arm can also be coupled to the gear housing in a second configuration to rotate the housing about the shaft axis in a second direction opposite the first direction when the arm is pressed downward.

Methods of manufacturing a gravity-powered, self-opening, and wind-resistant umbrella systems are provided. As evidenced from the teachings provided herein, the systems can be designed in a variety of configurations. The umbrella system can include a counterweight and system of pulleys, where the system of pulleys includes class 1 and class 2 pulleys configured with the counterweight to gain a mechanical advantage in the normal operation of the umbrella. The umbrella can be, for example, a patio umbrella in which the mechanical advantage provides a self-opening of an umbrella canopy and ease-of-retracting of the canopy for a user. And, the system can also be dynamic, such that it's also resistant to external forces, such as the wind.

A lightweight, flexible, portable bag which can be filled with beach sand, rocks, dirt or other loose material is connected to the upper part of the pole of a beach umbrella by a long flexible cord. The lower portion of the cord is secured to the open end of the nylon bag. The upper end of the cord is connected to the upper end of the pole of the umbrella by a hook-and-loop type fastener strap which wraps around the umbrella pole. The lower end of the cord is fitted within a hem in the opening of the bag to form a drawstring for closure of the bag to retain the sand or loose material in the bag during use. One end of the cord is formed into a loop with the long end of the cord passing through the loop and connected to the umbrella pole. Tension on the cord during use will cinch the drawstring closed thus retaining the material within the bag. The weight of the bag connected to the upper part of the pole will stabilize the umbrella in light to moderate winds. Prior to filling, the bag has minimal weight so as to be easily transported.

The umbrella base apparatus includes a base assembly having a base tube that can removably receive the umbrella therein. The base assembly includes a plate that can rest on a flat surface, one or more support arms extending from a central area outward from the plate, and a collar that is generally positioned at the central area of the plate. Each support arm interlocks with the collar. One or more weighted housings engage with a support arm and collar for providing mass to the umbrella base apparatus during use. The weighted housings are removable during transport or during submerged use. The plate and support arms have apertures that allow water to pass through during movement through water. 1. A device is disclosed for facilitating the anchoring and release of a structure to a medium, such as sand. The device is operable to inject a liquefying fluid into a medium upon a down stroke so as to facilitate liquefication within an area of the medium. The structure is simultaneously inserted into the area of the medium where liquefication has occurred by creating a vacuum within the structure, upon an upstroke, which facilitates the insertion operation. The distal end of the structure to be anchored is fitted with at least one protrusion for increasing the holding force of the medium. If desired, the distal end of the structure is also fitted with at least one fin operable under selective control of a user for reducing the holding force on the structure. In one embodiment, the user, when desiring to release the structure, rotates the structure, thereby rotating the fin. The fin, rotating within the liquefied medium, serves to reduce the holding force of the medium with respect to the structure, thereby allowing for easier removal of the structure by a user. 1.
