A walking stick has an integral personal alarm. Two types of alarm system may be used in suitably adapted walking sticks, preferably situated between the handle and the stick. One Type is a gas cylinder powered alarm, operated by finger pressure through the on alarm control aperture in the side of the upper part of the stick. Another Type is a battery powered alarm which is similarly operated by the finger. The alarm may be situated inside a suitable housing in the top of the stick.

The lower portion of the cord is secured to the open end of the nylon bag. The upper end of the cord is connected to the upper end of the pole of the umbrella by a hook-and-loop type fastener strap which wraps around the umbrella pole. The lower end of the cord is fitted within a hem in the opening of the bag to form a drawstring for closure of the bag to retain the sand or loose material in the bag during use. One end of the cord is formed into a loop with the long end of the cord passing through the loop and connected to the umbrella pole. Tension on the cord during use will cinch the drawstring closed thus retaining the material within the bag. The weight of the bag connected to the upper part of the pole will stabilize the umbrella in light to moderate winds. Prior to filling, the bag has minimal weight so as to be easily transported.

A method , comprising:pairing a walking cane to a mobile device;receiving a command sent from the walking cane to activate a camera in the mobile device;storing an image of a tip of the walking cane in memory of the mobile device;receiving at the mobile device an orientation angle sent from the walking cane; andinferring a distance from the tip of the walking cane to the mobile device based on information in the image and the orientation angle of the walking cane,wherein the distance is used to aid a visually impaired user of the mobile device.2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:retrieving a length of the walking cane from the memory of the mobile device; andretrieving an arm length of the visually impaired user from the memory of the mobile device.3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:calculating a first maximum for the distance as twice the length of the walking cane; andcalculating a second maximum for the distance as a sum of the length of the walking cane and the arm length of the visually impaired user.4. Methods, systems, and products estimate distances to aid a visually impaired user of a mobile device. As the user carries the mobile device, a camera in the mobile device captures images of a walking cane. The images of the walking cane are analyzed to infer a distance between a tip of the walking cane and the mobile device. The distance may then be used by navigational tools to aid the visually impaired user. 1. A method , comprising:pairing a walking cane to a mobile device;determining, by the mobile device, a location at which radio signals are received;querying, by the mobile device, an electronic database for the location, the electronic database electronically associating obstacles to locations including the location at which the radio signals are received;retrieving, by the mobile device, an obstacle of the obstacles in the electronic database that is electronically associated to the location at which the radio signals are received; andinferring, by the mobile device, a distance from the walking cane to the obstacle.2. An improved cane with an internal grasping apparatus including an actuator on the cane handle and a plurality of clamps that extends from the foot or base of the cane. A cord system within the casing of the cane connects the actuator to the clamps so that when the actuator is in use, the clamps close or open to either grasp or release objects, depending on the amount of pressure applied to the actuator. Applying pressure to the actuator extends a plurality of clamps from the distal end of the cane that can be used to assist with grasping of objects. Releasing pressure to the actuator on the cane handle will retract the clamps back into the distal end of the cane to where the clamps are hidden. 1. My invention shows how a walking cane can be made that would operate as a radio receiver to give a blind person instructions or warnings as they passed by obstacles in the city or town they lived in. 1. A walking cane that receives radio signals and converts these signals into voice commands that are emitted by a speaker in the cane itself, this allows a blind person to receive instructions or warnings as they pass by various obstacles in the city or town they reside in. The cane includes a hollow shaft having a first end and a second end, a grasping mechanism within the first end of the shaft, and a release mechanism adjacent to the second end of the shaft. The release mechanism includes a handle, a trigger within the handle, and a release button. Pressing the release button extends the trigger beyond the handle and extends the grasping fingers beyond the first end of the shaft so that the grasping fingers are separated by a first distance. Squeezing the handle retracts the grasping fingers and reduces the distance between the grasping fingers to a second distance less than the first distance. Squeezing the handle so that the grasping fingers are fully retracted into the first end of the shaft results in the trigger and the grasping mechanism being locked into place until the release button is pressed again.
