A curtain pole 2 is formed from a plurality of elements 6,8,10 each having a generally circular cross-section but wit one flattened side 12. Some of the elements 10 have ends which are perpendicular to the axis of the pole while other elements 6,8 have ends which are angled slightly to the perpendicular. These angled elements enable a pole to be constructed with curved portions so that it can be fitted to shaped window areas. The elements are joined together by means of dovetail shaped wedges which engage with recesses 24 in each end face of the elements.
