An abrading device and method for irritating and blotting a membrane, particularly the pleural membrane. The method uses a device which is small enough to be inserted and withdrawn through a thoracoport. The device includes a proximal end configured to be gripped by a surgeon and a distal end configured to be inserted into the patient. A stainless steel shaft connects the distal and proximal ends of the abrading device. The distal end includes a series of nylon bristles. The bristles are attached to the device wire wrapped around the distal end of the device. The connecting shaft and wrapped wire are malleable. Once the device is inserted, the surgeon grips the proximal end and manipulates the device so that the series of nylon bristles abrades the walls of the pleural space. Once the abrading process is complete, the surgeon can easily withdraw the device back through the thoracoport.

A vacuum motor has a piston that linearly oscillates in the internal space of a housing. The predetermined dimension may be adjusted with an adjustment mechanism ( 58 ) provided to vary the depth of tissue removal. The abrasive member (28) is then repositioned into the distal end of the catheter sheath (21), and is then removed from the patient. The thrombogenic area created along the inner surfaces of the patent foramen ovale then creates a thrombus which over time turns into a scar, and the foramen ovale is obliterated.

The protective sleeve is composed of tubular flexible material which is slid forward along a shaft of the endometrial brush to cover the bristles during insertion. After the bristle section of the brush is in its desired position in the endometrial cavity, the protective sleeve is slid backward along the shaft, thereby uncovering the bristles. The handle is then manipulated to cause the bristles to scrape the walls of the endometrial cavity, thereby collecting sample tissue and/or cells. The brush is then withdrawn through the cervix. The collected sample is smeared on a microscope slide and analyzed.

A specimen sampling device for the collection of microbiological biopsy specimen from a body cavity and, more particularly, a device which incorporates a cytology brush which is readily introducible into the biopsy channel of an endoscope. In particular, the cytology brush is especially adapted for brushing and thereby obtaining microbiological biopsy specimen from areas of the gastrointestinal tract which are difficult to reach. A flexible stainless steel sheath constituted from helical coils is encompassed by a plastic sleeve which is adhered thereto, such plastic sleeve preferably being constituted from teflon or the like, and in which a proximal end of the tubing includes structure cooperative with a manipulating component attached to a composite operating wire structure for a cytology brush located at a distal end thereof and extending through the sheath so as to be able to longitudinally displace and rotate the wire and resultingly the cytology brush in a controlled mode. For this purpose, the outer sleeve consisting of the plastic or teflon tubing extends a predetermined axial length beyond the distal end of the inner sheath constituted from the stainless steel helical coils, so as to form a cylindrical section of larger diameter than the internal diameter of the helical coil flexible member, and with the cytology brush, in the retracted position thereof entirely located within the confines of this cylindrical section.

The assembly includes a flexible outer catheter provided with a metal tip at its distal end, a flexible stylet, and a control structure at the proximal end of the catheter to control movement of the stylet within and axially along the catheter and for the introduction of fluids to the collection site and/or withdrawal of fluids within the catheter from the collection site. The stylet has a distal end provided with a brush terminating with a needle point or a looped type end at its distal end. The brush will be movable through an incision in tissue produced by the needle point allowing penetration through the body cavity wall into a tumor or lesion located therebeyond. The stylet can also include a coiled spring for providing a flexible connection between the control structure and the tissue collection device. In addition to a brush, the tissue collection device can include a hollow needle or a pair of selectively sliding needles. Specimen samples can be obtained and local flushing of the specimen collection site is possible. Specimen material can also be flushed from within the catheter.

A cytologic sampling device for collecting cervical and vaginal cell specimens from a uterine cervix and vagina. The device includes an elongated flat stem having opposite end portions and a longitudinal portion extending between the opposite end portions. A first brush is disposed on one end portion of the stem for collecting endocervical cell specimens by inserting the one end portion into the vagina and within the mouth of the cervix and rotating the stem with the first brush wiping against the endocervical wall. A third brush is disposed on the other end portion of the stem for collecting vaginal cell specimens by inserting the other end portion into the vagina and wiping the second brush against the vaginal wall. The device also includes an elongated actuator supported on the longitudinal stem portion and having a second brush on one end of the actuator for collecting exocervical cell specimens. By applying finger pressure to a gripping element on an opposite end of the actuator, the actuator is slidably moved relative to the longitudinal stem portion so as to pivot the second brush from a stored position adjacent to the stem, permitting easy entry and removal of the one end portion of the stem into and from the vagina, to a deployed position displaced from the stem, permitting collecting of exocervical cell specimens by the second brush and endocervical cell specimens by the first brush in the same rotational motion of the stem.

The drive motor unit receives the proximal end of the drive shaft and rotates it to rotate the brush bristles. Simultaneously, a drive hub of the brush drive shaft locks into a drive chuck of a drive motor unit to enable rotation of the drive shaft, and the proximal drive shaft end is seated in a dynamic seal that inhibits infiltration of blood and thrombolytic agent into the drive motor housing.
